We’ve really seen it all, which makes us incredibly excited for what’s to come, but here’s a quick taste of some of the standout performers from these first few days of basketball in the Garden State.
Ally Sweeney Ally Sweeney 5'8" | SG Sparta | 2023 State NJ – Sparta (2023)
Sweeney, already a fantastic player for the reigning NJSIAA Group 3 champions in Sparta, is now expected to have a much larger role as teammate and Villanova commit Brynn McCurry Brynn McCurry 6'1" | PF Sparta | 2023 State NJ is feared to be out for the season with a significant injury. She wasted no time in her first game to build upon last season’s success, scoring a game-high 21 points, including 3 three-pointers, eight rebounds and four assists.
Julia Corsentino Julia Corsentino 5'9" | SG Rumson-Fair Haven | 2023 State NJ – Rumson Fair-Haven (2023)
The Marist commit became the newest member of RFH’s 1000 point club within the first two games of the season and she’s really balled out so far, averaging 21.5 PPG to start things out, with a near double-double in a 54-45 loss against Sparta on Friday. Corsentino is also making it count at the foul line, shooting 77.8 percent (14-for-18) so far.
Alexis Davis Alexis Davis 6'0" | SF Woodbury | 2023 State NJ – Woodbury (2023)
Pencil Davis in as a sure-fire Player of the Year candidate in the entirety of New Jersey as she’s coming off a 30-point, 23-rebound performance against Staten Island Academy (NY) on Friday and has nearly posted 30-point, 20-rebound averages through her first two games. If you thought last season was a dominant one for the forward, her senior season will be that much more.
Angelees Carrasquillo Angelees Carrasquillo PG Pennsauken | 2023 NJ – Pennsauken (2023)
Carrasquillo has seemingly already made quite the jump in her game after her first game of the season against Pemberton, leading the team in scoring with 16 points, including going 8-for-13 from the foul line. Just great stuff to start things out and after just missing a double-digit scoring average as a junior, all signs point to her shattering that mark as a senior.
Alexa Castro Alexa Castro 5'10" | PF Dunellen | 2023 State NJ – Dunellen (2023)
The seniors are really showing out to begin things in the Garden State, including the 5-10 forward who had herself quite the first game of the season for Dunellen. A near double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds, as well as two blocks and five steals. She was automatic on Friday and should be an incredibly exciting player to watch this season.
Addison Platt – Pope John (2026)
Friday was the first time fans got to see Platt play in a varsity game in high school and she didn’t disappoint on defense, hauling in a game-high 15 rebounds, as well as three blocks and five steals. Four assists from her wasn’t bad either. The scoring might not have been there, but this was just her first game as a freshman. It will come in time, but what a performance to start things off.
Aiisha Bowman Aiisha Bowman PF Deptford | 2024 NJ – Deptford (2024)
Deptford needed Bowman in a big way on Friday night and she delivered, with 12 points, nine rebounds and six blocks in a 34-25 win for the Spartans over Gloucester Tech. Bowman has shown glimpses of what she can do over the past two years, but with just 25 games on varsity under her belt, this is the season for her breakout season.
Brooke Sztenderowicz Brooke Sztenderowicz 5'7" | PG Cinnaminson | 2023 State NJ – Cinnaminson (2023)
Cinnaminson had a surprise Opening Day victory against recent NJ power Trenton Catholic, thanks to a game-high 25 points from Sztenderowicz, including two three-pointers. She made her mark in all facets, all phases of the game and was just fantastic. Another 10-point performance against Holy Cross Prep on Friday has the ball rolling for her overall.
Megan Donelson Megan Donelson 5'6" | CG Woodstown | 2025 State NJ – Woodstown (2025)
Her freshman season was full of promise and Donelson made sure to build on that through the first game of her sophomore season with Woodstown, scoring 16 points on a great shot selection and 75 percent free throw shooting. The Wolverines are going to be counting on her big time for some big time results, so this was a great way to get things started.
Gabby Loftin Gabby Loftin 5'8" | SG Florence | 2023 State NJ – Florence (2023)
Loftin is reaching a new level of dominance this season for Florence, averaging 29 PPG through her first two games of the season, dominating the interior and making opponents clueless on defense. And what a game she had against Riverside to open up the season, recording a ridiculous 13 steals in a 50-3 victory on Thursday.
Elizabeth Schultes – Gloucester City (2025)
Schultes went from putting up bench player numbers last season to one who out of the gates, had a 25-point performance for Gloucester City in a close loss against Paulsboro on Thursday. Despite the loss, there’s a lot to look forward to with such great basketball coming from the sophomore.
