Continue ReadingI had written an article on records being broken a couple weeks ago. It didn’t take long to see more record setting performance. There were three school scoring records broken since. There may be more but I’ll start with these, plus one notable performance from yet another freshman. In my first article on records being shattered, I wrote about freshman Brooklyn Haywood who broke the Union school record with 35 points. I watched her Union team again in a game where they put up 66 points in the first half. I don’t know for sure but they may have set a school record for threes made as a team. Ava Smith Ava Smith 5'8" | SG Union | 2024 State WA and the rest of the backcourt torched the nets with one triple after another. I might be updating that first article soon with the way Union shoots it. Here are a few more record setting performances.
Her 36 was enough to break the school record for Ellensburg. This is an Ellensburg team that went undefeated last season and shows no signs of slowing down winning their 31st game in a row last night. . She is averaging 24.5 points a game for a team that can hurt you from inside and out. They have quickness at the guard position and size in the post. They pressure the ball and create turnovers. This is one of the better defensive teams I have watched. If you happen to get by the first line of defense you have some serious shot blockers waiting for n Anderson, 6’4 Alana Marrs, and 5’10 Brooke Ravet. Sophomore Jameson Phillip and senior Rylee Leishman Rylee Leishman 5’7″ | CG Ellensburg | 2023 State WA are the guards that apply ball pressure at the top of the defense.
She set a new school record for Grandview besting the old record by one point. Scoring 36. She is 2nd in the CWA4C in scoring at 22 points per game. She leads the confidence in free throws attempted at 51 and has knocked down 12 triples in seven games thus far, which leads the conference in makes.

Maybe the most unsuspecting of the three but also the biggest point total added to the record books. She scored 45 points in a 78-61 win over MWP to set the school record. Yet another stellar performance from a sophomore point guard. She was a 2nd team all-league pick last season as a freshman.
I saw no mention of this being a school record but it fits the theme. She is a shooter and I knew this since watching her drop 3 after 3 at the Top 250 Expo in Bellevue this summer, where she was my tournament MVP. . She put on quite the shooting clinic. She did it again, this time for her Newport team, scoring 34 points and connecting on 9 triples in a 59-55 win vs Issaquah. When she gets hot it is lights out and she can hit from well beyond the arc. She is a great player in the mid-range as well. She creates space off the dribble to get herself buckets. She has some craftiness to her game and gets creative enough to make it work. She must have averaged close to 30 points in the three games I watched her play this summer.
