The games span four days and bring in teams from the border to the UP. It’s a full slate of games that start at nine in the morning and go past nine at night. Most of the games on Day 1 came down to the final minute and had some strong performances. We are going to start our write ups by giving some love to the bigs.
Clarkston will definitely miss Mia when she graduates this year as bigs that can switch onto the perimeter are hard to find. She does a nice job rebounding and rim protecting. She finds open teammates for connecting passes and made the most of her opportunities.
Paula Ormoragha
Paula Ormoragha
The South Lake big struggled to finish early but still scored 13 points. Her touch came as the game went on, and she got ample opportunities due to her strong base, good hands, and great footwork. She finds the open space and rebounds in traffic.
Madalyn Belmore
Madalyn Belmore
Madalyn didn’t start this game, but you have to wonder if this will change. She did an admirable job on one of the best bigs in the state. She is a solid rebounder and protects the rim without fouling. She has good footwork in the post to create good seals.
Brielle Swain
Brielle Swain
Brielle has a strong drop step to the baseline and initiates contact on the shot. Her high-low entry passes are a thing of beauty. She is a nice rim protector. She only had seven points on the day, but she hit two clutch free throws to give a late fourth quarter lead and then a rebound and put back that iced the game.
Jade Jones
Jade Jones
Jade is a high energy big that stays with plays even after most would quit. She is very active in defense in the high post and is able to deflect entry passes. She also does a nice job of getting steals in the press. She goes strong to the hole when she gets touches.
