With a field sporting some talented teams and players, this is one of the top girls tournaments during the holiday season in Southern California. I was able to stop by on Monday, Dec. 26 for the first day of the tournament, and here’s a look at some additional standouts that I saw.
1 Samantha Maldonado – San Fernando 2023
Maldonado is a classic type of post player. Able to get good position in the paint and seal off her defender. Can use spins to get to the basket and shot fakes as well. Defensively, she cuts off drives to the basket and protects the paint, stays vertical. Good contests at the basket. A good free throw shooter when she’s able to get to the line.

What stood out the most to me about Gould is her rebounding ability. She boxes out properly and rebounds with two hands. Sneaks her way into the paint and attacks the glass. She’s a center who can space the floor and shoot consistently off the catch from three-point range. Good free-throw shooter. Plays the high post well and can find cutters around the basket. Communicates well defensively.
3 Vanessa Zavala – Hart 2023
Zavala is another player who was very active on the glass. She’s not very big but she’s mobile and long and makes sure she’s in position to grab boards. She’s active defensively, using her length and quick hands to poke the ball free. Makes a lot of hustle plays chasing down loose balls. Plays with a lot of energy. Most of her play comes from off-ball movement.

– Crescenta Valley 2024
Ray is a scoring guard with a few D1 offers already. She’s comfortable with the ball in her hands and being tasked with generating offense. She can attack middle, draw the defense and kick the ball out to open shooters. She can score when she wants to with off the dribble jumpers or finishes at the basket. She’s solid off-ball too relocating and getting open to shoot.
