I post “it’s not what you do, it’s who do it against” over and over yet it goes over the heads of many because numbers can be deceiving and that’s one of the main reasons why I don’t base what I think on anything anyone else writes, tweets or whatever. What isn’t deceiving is the new players I caught, some I had seen or seen enough of so here is Part 1
#27 Mia Hammonds Mia Hammonds 6'2" | C Steele | 2024 State TX -6’2 C (Cibolo Steele)
Hammonds was impressive at the Texas Invitational in so many ways yet let me open things up with her being “long and athletic” which will always be the base. She went after everything off the rim, that’s HUGE but so was her timing when you factor in her height as well as wingspan as she blocked, deflected, and altered shots. Her interior defense was very good, including her lateral movement as well as how she regrouped. She finished around the rim, as well as on putbacks but she also dropped the short jumper. I expect another big jump on the next update
#36 Taytum Bell Taytum Bell 5'10" | SG Amarillo | 2024 State TX -5’10 SG (Amarillo)
Bell definitely was ringing loudly at the Spring Creek Mansfield Invitational starting with her understanding positioning and outrebounding taller players over and over. Factor in her desire to go after everything, loose balls included along with her “on the ball” defense baseline to baseline as well as in the set. She attacks the basket powerfully, from multiple angles and finished strongly after contact
#37 Yves Cox Yves Cox 6'3" | C Link Year | 2024 MO – 6’3 C (Braswell)
Cox gave me a glimpse during club basketball season last year and her Spring Creek Mansfield Invitational showed me I wasn’t seeing a mirage. She is also long and athletic with good timing but her hands and footwork coupled with her size make her hard to handle around the basket. She also scores facing the basket and runs the floor on both ends of the court
#38 Crishawn Coleman Crishawn Coleman 5'9" | SG Mansfield Timberview | 2024 State TX -5’9 SG (Mansfield Timberview)
Coleman is an explosive scorer and although I missed her All-Tournament performance at the Spring Creek Mansfield Invitational, I was fortunate enough to catch her a few times via LIVESTREAM, one more time, I’m a REAL EVALUATOR. She elevates on her jumper and drops the mid to long range with a hand in her face yet her first step is hard to handle because she not only attacks the basket strongly, she showed she could finish with either hand, after the lick. Her baseline-to-baseline defense is also a huge plus
#51 Madison Griggs Madison Griggs 5'10" | SF Mansfield Legacy | 2024 State TX -5’10 SF (Mansfield Legacy)
Griggs gave me a nice look during club season last year by dropping the long ball, as well as rebounding on both ends yet watching her set the defender up to get her shot off was an added bonus for me. She also showed the quick release and when you can “catch and shoot” as well as attacking the basket and finish after contact gives her options and keeps the defender guessing. She rebounded and ran the floor, on both ends
