On Wednesday evening at Cranston East High School, four Division 1 teams took the court with a trip to the Division 1 championship game on the line. In game one, No. 9 seed Rogers, coming off an upset of No. 1 seed South Kingston, took on No. 4 seed La Salle. In game two, No. 6 seed St. Mary Academy-Bay View faced off against No. 2 seed Juanita Sanchez Complex. Here are some prospects who stood out:
Marissa Lamarre
Marissa Lamarre
As La Salle’s floor general, Lamarre brings quickness and excellent court vision to the point guard position. She has a quick-release three point shot and strong instincts on the defensive end. Lamarre may be the smallest player on the court, but her impact is huge.
Maeve Crowley
Maeve Crowley
Crowley’s length and athleticism set her apart. She can create her own shot on the off defensive end and disrupt the passing lane on the defensive end. Crowley boxes out strong and works hard to create more opportunities for her team by pulling down rebounds on both ends of the court. Earlier this season, Crowley hit the 1,000 point mark for her high school career, a testament to her consistent scoring abilities.
Danaysha Cherry
Danaysha Cherry
Cherry is skilled at driving to the basket, finishing through contact or drawing a foul. Her skills go beyond the dribble-drive, and she has the range to knock down a smooth 15-footer or create some high-low action. Defenses need to watch out for Cherry because she can deliver from multiple points on the floor.
Ahtiana Benway Ahtiana Benway 5’6″ | CG St. Mary Academy Bayview | 2023 State NewE is a speedy, scrappy combo guard who has the ability to push pace in transition. With elite ball-handling skills and passing abilities, Benway is a talented facilitator on the offensive end. On defense, she uses her quick hands and court vision to disrupt the offensive flow of opposing offenses.
Genesis McNeil Genesis McNeil 5’11” | SG Juanita Sanchez | 2023 State NewE isn’t a RI Gatorade Player of the Year nominee for no reason. A lanky, do-it-all shooting guard, McNeil can put up triple-double numbers in a hurry. At nearly six feet tall, McNeil is a tall shooting guard with a versatile skill set. One minute she’s bringing the ball up the court, and the next she’s driving to the post. McNeil is a unique player with a diverse skillset and demands the attention of opponents.
