I’m highlighting those 2 particular games because when I did my PLAYOFF PREVIEW, I saw 3 games that could possibly have a team that finished 4th beat a team that actually won a district and that’s because all districts are not equal. Deer Park barely beat Humble, I hadn’t seen humble so unlike others, I wasn’t going to make a decision not knowing any of their players yet Macie Whitfield was probably THE GLUE in their 3-point victory
Westside made a ferocious comeback, one thing I can say about their teams is that they never quit and go hard, yet they lost to 4th place Cy Ridge, in fact, their district was swept. Again, #ThereIsNoMe as I don’t go by RANKINGS and RECORDS, I go by WHAT I SEE and WHAT I KNOW
Here are the STANDOUTS
WESTSIDE
Neso Anisiobi-5’10 SF [2024]
Anisiobi is “long and athletic” which, one more time, will always be the base. She sliced to the basket to score, and she also finished around the basket, including putbacks as she goes after everything off the rim. She also did a good job defensively, both in and outside the paint
J’Riana Moore-5’6 G [2023]
Moore gave me more as she hit some huge buckets to help start the Wolves’ comeback and an even bigger 3 down the stretch to put them in striking distance. Her poise under pressure was also HUGE, and so was her defense
CY RIDGE
Olivia Shook-5’3 CG [2023]
Shook has been knocking down shots since I wrote about her years ago as a freshman and she hit some big ones throughout the game which helped them advance
Scejonna Anderson-5’7 PG [2023]
Anderson caught my eye during the club season and her transferring to the team and becoming eligible in January made this no ordinary #4 team. She attacks off the dribble, has good body control, and can drop it mid to long-range yet her court vision and handling the ball under pressure. I made a call to a college coach which resulted in her picking up an offer, again, #ThereIsNoMe
OTHERS
Gwendlyn McGrew Gwendlyn McGrew 6'0" | CG Pasadena Memorial | 2024 State TX -5’10 SG
McGrew said “don’t call it a comeback, she’s been here for years” the talented junior is still one of the best in Texas so I hadn’t seen her since her knee injury. Mobility and lateral movement tells me she’s going to be one of the hottest prospects on the club circuit from Texas because she can drop it from outside, had multiple 3-pointers, and score from midrange and off the dribble yet watching her go coast to coast and finish or dish was very nice
Jacei Denley Jacei Denley 5'6" | SG Beaumont Westbrook | 2023 State TX -5’7 CG [2023]
Denley had at least 19 when I finally got a feed in the 3rd quarter yet the game was out of reach. The Lamar signee got my #D1Lock before her first middle school game yet I hadn’t seen her this season, club or school. This team is scary, they already beat Summer Creek so her supporting cast has a chance to make a deep run
