Continue ReadingEvery year, the New Mexico High School Coaches Association within the Metro Area have organized a purpose of recognizing the best basketball players in the metro area. With the 2022-23 season just wrapping up last week, the 2023 Metro selection are officially out, and we’ll start with the 4A Girls Class.
1st Team All-Metro
Kathleen Obisike Kathleen Obisike 5'11" | C Hope Christian | 2023 State NM “Hope Christian”- The Star Center led Hope Christian to the 4A State Semifinals this year while averaging 19 ppg and 15 rpg. She was the states 4th leading scorer and the states leading rebounder.
Alyssa Maes Alyssa Maes 5'8" | SG St. Pius X | 2024 State NM “St. Pius”- Alyssa Maes Alyssa Maes 5'8" | SG St. Pius X | 2024 State NM had an excellent senior season for St. Pius. They reached the 4A State Semifinals and was the #3 seed this season. Alyssa Maes Alyssa Maes 5'8" | SG St. Pius X | 2024 State NM led the Sartans in scoring averaging 17 ppg and 5 apg.
Aaliyah Nevarez Aaliyah Nevarez 5'10" | SF Highland | 2023 State NM “Highland” – Aaliyah Nevarez Aaliyah Nevarez 5'10" | SF Highland | 2023 State NM had a solid season for the Highland Hornets averaging about 13 ppg and 5 rpg. Her play led the Hornets to another playoff berth this past season.
Azalia Malzia “Valencia” – The Jaguars Star was one of two players from their roster selected to the All-Metro Team. She was the team’s second leading scorer this year averaging about 12 ppg and led the team in rebounding with about 6 boards per game. Her play helped the Jaguars reach the 4A State Quarterfinals this past season.
Aneesa Chavez Aneesa Chavez SG Moriarty | 2023 State NM “Moriarty” – The senior guard led the Pintos to the State Tournament this past season while leading her team in scoring.
2nd Team All-Metro
Gabby O’Hara Gabby O’Hara 5'5" | SF Bernalillo | 2023 State NM “Bernalillo” – Despite missing the 4A State Playoffs this past season, Gabby O’Hara Gabby O’Hara 5'5" | SF Bernalillo | 2023 State NM was terrific individually. She led the Spartans in scoring and rebounding this year averaging a double-double.
Addie Spratley “Albuquerque Academy” – The Chargers post player Addie Spratley, averaged near a double-double this year while leading Albuquerque Academy to a playoff spot in the 4A Girls Tournament.
Maesyn Lopez Maesyn Lopez 6'0" | PF Belen | 2023 State NM “Belen” – Despite a tough season for the Belen Eagles, Maesyn Lopez Maesyn Lopez 6'0" | PF Belen | 2023 State NM played well by all accounts averaging over 10 ppg as the team’s leading scorer. She was one of the state’s top power forwards in the post and around the rim.
Charlotte Bitsoih “Hope Christian” – Charlotte Bitsoih was the Huskies third star and member of their Big Three. She averaged a consistent 11 ppg and was the team’s best passer averaging 4 apg. She ranked 5th in NM in assists per game.
Jadyn Montoya Jadyn Montoya SG Valencia | 2025 State NM “Valencia” – Was the Valencia Jaguars leading scorer this year averaging about 13 ppg. Led them to a 19-11 record and the second round of the 4A Girls State Tournament.
3rd Team All-Metro
Alyssa Vigil Alyssa Vigil 5'8" | SF Hope Christian | 2023 State NM “Hope Christian” – Alyssa Vigil Alyssa Vigil 5'8" | SF Hope Christian | 2023 State NM should be first team all-metro in my opinion. She averaged 18 ppg which ranked 8th in NM and 2nd in the 4A Class. She led Hope Christian to the 4A State Semifinals and came withing one game of the 4A State Championship Game.
Illiana Aragon Illiana Aragon 5'3" | PG Valley | 2023 State NM “Valley” – Illiana Aragon Illiana Aragon 5'3" | PG Valley | 2023 State NM averaged 10 ppg and 3 apg for the Valley Vikings this year. They reached the 4A State Tournament and finished with a 16-12 record on the season.
Savannah Combs “Highland” – Savannah Combs was the Hornets second best player behind teammate Aaliyah Nevarez Aaliyah Nevarez 5'10" | SF Highland | 2023 State NM . She averaged 7 ppg, 8 rpg and 2 bpg. She played her role really well while playing winning basketball for Highland this season.
Bleona Agushi Bleona Agushi PG Del Norte | 2025 State NM “Del Norte” – Bleona Agushi Bleona Agushi PG Del Norte | 2025 State NM averaged over 14 ppg this season for the Del Norte Knights. That ranked 4th in the 4A Class this past year and marked a 5-point increase from last season’s total as a freshman.
Noelani Montoya Noelani Montoya PF Albuquerque Academy | 2024 State NM “Albuquerque Academy” – Noelani Montoya Noelani Montoya PF Albuquerque Academy | 2024 State NM was the Chargers second best player this past season. She was the teams second leading scorer that averaged about 9 ppg and helped the Chargers make the 4A playoffs this past year.
4A Girls Metro Coach of the Year: Michael Cole “Hope Christian”.
4A Girls Metro Defensive Player of the Year: Charlotte Bitsoih “Hope Christian”.
