Both lower seeds won in the semifinals, and No. 3 seed Kewaskum eventually took home the gold ball on Saturday afternoon. Let’s talk about five kids I believe deserve recognition for their play throughout those three days.
F: Morgan Adams Morgan Adams 5'10" | PF Kewaskum | 2023 State WI
In the semifinal game against West Salem, both teams played defensive basketball, and it was a little sloppy on the offensive end, especially in the first half. However, Morgan Adams Morgan Adams 5'10" | PF Kewaskum | 2023 State WI made the difference in the game. She shot seven of ten from the field and ended the game with a 19-point and ten-rebound double-double. Her ability to generate offense against a solid defensive unit got her team to the state title game.
F: Madilyn Dogs Madilyn Dogs 6'0" | CG Kewaskum | 2023 State WI
There are few kids throughout my time covering girl’s basketball in Wisconsin that I’ve enjoyed watching more than Madi Dogs. What she can do on the defensive end is nothing short of spectacular. She can defend anyone on the floor with her size, length, and athleticism, and she did that throughout the two games at state. I couldn’t be happier that she got to end her time at Kewaskum with a gold ball. She deserved it.
The Milwaukee Academy of Science guard showed how talented she was in front of the state of Wisconsin. She’s one of the best I’ve seen at getting to the rim in Wisconsin, and Ellis showed out at the Resch Center. The game she played against Waupun was absurd. Her 22 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, and a win over the defending state champions made everyone in the building take notice of her, and she’ll make a coaching staff at the next level very happy.
G: Beautiful Waheed Beautiful Waheed 5'9" | CG Milwaukee Academy of Science | 2023 State WI
Waheed can make plays that nobody else in Wisconsin can, and she does it routinely. She had three blocked shots in the semifinals and four in the state title game. I loved watching her cover ground on the defensive end and make plays on the ball that looked impossible. Her athleticism is game-changing. She didn’t have her best games on the offensive end, but when her team needed points, she found a way to put the ball in the basket.
G: Julia Steger
The Kewaskum guard had one of the best games of the state tournament in the state title game against MAS. Steger finished with 23 points, ten rebounds, and only two turnovers in over 30 minutes against one of the most frantic pressing teams in the state. Steger’s play is a significant reason why Kewaskum brought home their program’s first gold ball.
