All of these teams are lower seeds than the team they’re playing, but in a world where things go their way, they could give their opponent some problems.
Hortonville
Although they’ll be missing Kallie Peppler Kallie Peppler 6'0" | PF Hortonville | 2024 State WI , the Polar Bears are still a team that can give anyone in the state a game. Rainey Welson Rainey Welson 5'9" | CG Hortonville | 2025 State WI is one of the most talented kids in the state and has been the Polar Bears’ leading scorer in her two seasons there. MiKayla Werner MiKayla Werner 6'0" | PF Hortonville | 2024 State WI can own the glass on each end of the floor, and they have plenty of role players to fill in the gaps. They’ll match up with Neenah for the third time this season, and it should be a fun game to watch.
Kimberly
The lone 7-seed still standing, the Papermakers are not easy to deal with over 36 minutes. MaKenzie Drout MaKenzie Drout 5'9" | CG Kimberly | 2023 State WI is one of the most efficient scorers in the state, and she’s comfortable creating her offense. Raegan Krueger Raegan Krueger 6'1" | PF Kimberly | 2025 State WI and Katelyn McGinnis Katelyn McGinnis 5'10" | CG Kimberly | 2025 State WI can spread the floor and make life difficult for defenses if they make their shots. Nobody will pick them over Germantown, but this isn’t an easy matchup for the Warhawks.
Pius XI
Another team nobody will pick but isn’t a cakewalk is Pius against Pewaukee. All the Popes’ players can match up with Pewaukee if things go right. They played well against the Pirates on the road, but a stretch of bad basketball for four minutes is all it took for the game to become a blowout. They’ve been streaky this season, but the Popes have an offense that can go blow-for-blow with the Pirates. Like Kimberly, nobody expects the Popes to win, let alone compete, but nobody knows the Pirates better than Pius. It’ll be the third time they’ve played this season, and if Pius managed to win, it wouldn’t shock me.
Cuba City
Last season, the Cubans had every right to believe they should’ve beaten Aquinas on the road. They’ve improved this season and even upset an undefeated New Glarus team tonight. They’re a team that nobody gets to see that much because they’re tucked away in the southwest corner of the state, but if the Cubans beat the Blugolds, they’ll be the talk of the state tournament among Division 4 next week in Green Bay.
