North Standouts:
Sakoya Sweeney Sakoya Sweeney 5'6" | CG Lake Region | 2023 State NewE , 5’8 PG – Lake Region High School Class of 2023
In Sweeney you seem to always get a nice balance of competition and expressive joy. Sakoya showed she wanted it just as bad as anyone as she dug in defensively, hawking the ball, talking on defense, and helping the helper. She was aggressive offensively too, finishing with a game-high 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Yet she was calm, cool and collected, flashing smiles as she joked with players on both sides. Got to honor someone who can compete and laugh at the same time.
Sage Maccauley, 5’10 W/F – Spaulding High School Class of 2023
Sage made it clear all game that she wouldn’t be denied at the rim. Maccauley got inside the paint in a variety of ways, but mainly she relied on her strong slashing game. She got by defenders with nice hesitations and used opponents as impromptu screens, snaking into the paint for finishes inside. Moreover, she was sound defensively as she guarded multiple positions and collected boards. Sage showed out with a two-way, 14-point performance.
Allison Fullem, 6’1 F – Mount Mansfield Union High School Class of 2023
With Alli’s combination of size, skill, and hustle, she’s hard to contain. Fullem went into her bag and put together a cool 10-point game. Alli flashed the post arsenal with a turnaround jumper from 10-feet along with baby hooks. Plus, she showed the range in transition with a clean trail 3. But it wasn’t just buckets. Alli defended the paint fiercely as she prevented post ups, challenged drivers, and rebounded the ball. Fullem’s physical inside/out game and all-around skillset was in full effect.
South Standouts:
Shelby Companion Shelby Companion 5'6" | CG CVU | 2023 State NewE , 5’7 G – Champlain Valley Union High School Class of 2023
Shelby came into this one with a jumper that was fully loaded. Companion was steady knocking down 3s from various spots on the floor, both in the halfcourt and on the break. In addition, she moved the ball exceptionally, finding quick passes and sneaky feeds for clean looks. Then again, her defense was stifling too as she handled perimeter players with nice footwork and disruption. Solid two-way effort.
Neveah Camp, 5’8 G – Burr and Burton Academy Class of 2023
A swiss-army knife style guard, Neveah made an impact in a multitude of ways. First and foremost, Neveah displayed her ability to see the floor and make plays. She pushed in transition and fed teammates at the rim. She also got a ton of paint touches where she finished looks inside or made smart passes which often culminated in scoring opportunities and hockey assists. Additionally, she showed nice anticipation on rebounds as a perimeter player. Camp put her game on notice.
Addison Hunter Addison Hunter 6'0" | PF Champlain Valley | 2023 State NewE , 6’0 F – Champlain Valley Union High School Class of 2023
Addi had a relatively quiet game in the box score, resorting to the role of a glue player more than anything. Hunter held down the paint with her solid post defense, and she dissuaded drivers from challenging her at the cup. In doing so, she collected a couple steals, a number of boards, and pushed in transition. The part-time point forward showed nice vision in the open court in addition to her facilitation out of the post. Smooth and steady game for Addi.
