Continue ReadingI saw most of these players on opening day and my second look was even better. I come from an era where BB-IQ and fundamentals attracted me to the game because my attention span was all over the place yet I’m still all over the place trying to find “those girls” who show next-level potential and here were some of them on Sunday
Ella Walterscheid Ella Walterscheid 5'1" | PG Muenster ISD | 2026 TX -5’2 G ( Texas Platinum 2026 S40 Bartlett) Muenster [2026]
Walterscheid falls into a category I hashtagged years ago, and that’s #sizedontmatter and that’s because “she can play”. Her ballhandling under pressure stood out, and so did her court vision but she also understands how to direct traffic and control the tempo, and her ability to set her teammates up for “gimmes’ was really nice
Brilen Butcher Brilen Butcher 4'11" | CG Martin's Mill | 2027 TX -5’2 G ( Texas Platinum 2026 S40 Bartlett) Martin’s Mill [2027]
Butcher sliced her way through the lane with an explosive first step. You probably didn’t catch that yet her “on the money passes” were caught many times as she threaded the needle, going full speed. She also attacked the basket and used some nice body control to finish, after contact. I was even more impressed at what she was doing playing up but then again, #sizedontmatter when you can play
Posey Labouff-5’6 G ( Team Griffin 2026 E40 Cobbins) Bixby [2027]
Labouff was another talented player that caught my eye on both days. I enjoyed watching her not only create her shot under pressure but knock it down with a hand in her face. She’s poised and under control playing up, this will speak volumes as time progresses but her court vision as well as doing things instinctively, like touch passes for assists, dropped the mic
Emily McCants-5’4 G ( North Houston Hustle 2026) New Caney [2026]
McCants falls into that #sizedontmatter category because not only can she play, but she plays on both ends. Her defense, baseline to baseline immediately caught my eye yet her playing the passing lane sealed it as she read the court nicely. She also handled the ball in the open court after the steal and speaking of the open court, her “stop and pop” jumper in transition was nice
Angela Green-5’10 F (My Sister’s Keeper 2026) Quachita Parish [2026]
Green saw red as she went after everything off the rim with authority. Her falling into that “you won’t outwork me” category had me smiling because not only did she go after rebounds, but she also went after loose balls. She showed she could score around the basket as well as face it for the short jumper and she defended both in and outside the paint
Jaciah McCalister-5’5 G ( DC Queens OKC 2026) Del City MS [2028]
McCalister was DELIghtful to observe playing up and under control and you probably didn’t get the reference but nevertheless, she is a “long and athletic” guard, which is also the base and she uses a deceptive first step to get to the rim. Her body control is nice, she used it to finish, even after contact and she did a good job playing defense
