Continue ReadingI talk about progression and the upside I see in certain players quite a bit and I’ve been doing it for a very long time, but certain things stand out because I know where the bar has been set. To the novice, that probably won’t make any sense but to break it down as simply as possible “if a player is doing certain things at a certain age” the potential is there and I saw plenty of players that fall into that category from the We Got Next event and I’ll start with size
- I’m clueless about what class these players are in but I did list the divisions
Vivian Zhang (Eye Can) 5/6 Division
Zhang left a lasting first impression because of her “getting it” already and watching her go after the ball off the rim and going after loose balls was a definite boost to start my coverage. She played solid interior defense, she also moved her feet and defended outside the paint yet watching her play the passing lane and handle the ball in the open court were also bright spots, and when you factor in she scored off the dribble …
Raylenne Abram (Lady Stackz) 5/6 Division
Abram is strong and her frame created some issues around the basket. She’s athletic and didn’t mind diving on the floor for loose balls and at this stage, that’s a good sign, well a very good sign yet she too went after the ball off the rim, on both ends, and played solid defense inside the paint. On top of that, she finished after contact
Carly Thompson (MWA) HS Division
Thompson mixed it up offensively and her midrange pull-up jumper looked nice, in fact, it may be a dealbreaker as she progresses on the court. Before you ask why, college coaches love players that can shoot it and she appears on her way to “the magic number” which is 6’0, that too is a plus. She rebounded, played the passing lane, and showed some nice moves inside the paint to finish
Alexis Murray (1 Nation) 5/6 Division
Murray keeps her hands up and that’s a plus as she showed then “hands and footwork” in its early stages yet it also helped her score on putbacks. yes, she rebounded on both ends of the court. She also ran the floor on both ends but what was also impressive was her “timing” as she not only blocked and deflected shots, but she also gave the offensive player something to think about as their shots were altered a few times
Bujayo Aladewoln (Cy Fair) HS Division
Aladewoln is “long and athletic” and that will always be the base. It’s a profile I love to evaluate yet more importantly so do college coaches and they offer scholarships. She’s on the verge of having a “college-ready frame” and her going after the ball off the rim, yes another player doing just that, is certainly refreshing. She scored on putbacks and did a good job defensively
Trinity Price (Cy Fair) HS Division
Price is RIGHT on the verge of breaking out. Not sure what grade she’s in yet she too is “long and athletic” and watching her show a variety of intangibles like the “hands and footwork” to score as well as taking the defender off the dribble, finishing either way after contact says a lot yet so did her rebounding on both ends and that, along with good timing will come in handy
Rodelle McClaskey (Platinum 2027)
McClaskey has plenty of things going for her and she understands how to create her shot for the jumper as well as attack the basket from the wing. She’s strong and her frame enabled her to get her shot off with players figuratively and literally hanging on her. She also rebounded and handled the ball in the open court afterward
