At that time we’ll select the players who we believe are the best 50 initial prospects among Minnesota’s incoming freshmen. As a sneak preview of that annual affair, we now offer you the Class of 2027 Watch List. This listing, presented in alphabetical order, identifies 20 players we have been watching whose assets and attributes represent the things we are looking for in a college prospect. Last week we brought you the first 10 prospects on that list and today, in part 3 of the series, we give you the next five.
McKinley Hoelscher McKinley Hoelscher 5'8" | CG Alexandria | 2027 State MN – guard, Comets Elite
The guard from Alexandria is having a strong spring and summer season playing at age level for the Comets and up three years whenever roster needs require her presence at 17U. McKinley is a playmaker with the poise of a veteran and the promise of a top-shelf prospect. She sees the floor well, makes quality decisions under defensive pressure, distributes the ball with polish and precision and has the ball-handling skills to make it all work. She can also put the ball on the deck and get past her defender to score at the rim. Package all of that with a gritty persona and a size-large motor and you have a premier prospect.
Morgan Mathiowetz Morgan Mathiowetz 5'6" | PG Sleepy Eye St. Mary's | 2027 State MN – guard, MN Rise Busse
Check out the school records displayed prominently on the gymnasium wall at St. Mary’s School in Sleepy High and you’ll see the name Mathiowetz everywhere. Athletic success runs in the family and the newest Mathiowetz standout is 8th grader Morgan. The point guard, who is the younger sister of South Dakota State guard Madison Mathiowetz, is an elite talent in her own right. With excellent court vision, a wonderful feel for the game, and a bag of tricks that runs deep, Morgan is already a varsity veteran. Manthiowetz can score in droves, distributes at a high level, and can quick-step past bigger, stronger, taller opponents of all descriptions. The possibilities are endless for this floor general.
Emma Millerbernd Emma Millerbernd 5'9" | CG Providence Academy | 2027 State MN – guard, North Tartan Nike
The Providence Academy guard is one of the most-accomplished players in the Class of 2027, a seasoned performer who is already a two-year varsity starter and absolutely crucial piece of a back-to-back high school state championship squad. That’s a lot. Did we mention that Emma also won the Prep Girls Hoops Defender of the Year award? With that type of resume so early in her career is it any wonder that Emma is considered by most to be one of the very best prospects in the grade. She has all of the tools colleges look for – speed, skill, tenacity, court vision and so on – but it is her calm demeanor and mature presence that make Millerbernd truly special.
Kaja Nash Kaja Nash 5'9" | PG Southwest Christian | 2027 State MN – guard, Minnesota Stars Antl
The 5’8 guard, formerly of Maranatha Christian and now Southwest Christian, has made a statement this spring on behalf of the Stars, one of the more-accomplished teams in the Class of 2027. We love Kaja’s energy, her pace and her giant motor. We are also impressed with Nash’s skill set. Kaja has really quick feet and straight-line speed in the open court. She also has the handles to do it all at maximum velocity while securing the basketball all the while. Kaja is a strong shooter who gets it up quick and high and consistently lands it in the cylinder. Nash is already a proven varsity performer who averaged 14 points per game last winter. We can’t wait to see what she does in the upcoming campaign.
Amisha Ramlall Amisha Ramlall 5'11" | CG Rosemount | 2027 State MN – guard, Fury 2027 Blue
Shooter! If we had to use only one word to describe the guard from Rosemount that would be it. She is arguably the best player in the class at launching the ball from distance as her performance in the AAU State Championship game will attest. Ramlall was on fire in the second half, a streak of success that was remarkable in the moment but not really out of the ordinary for Amisha. But there’s so much more she can do to help her team reach their collective goals. Ramlall can put the ball on the floor and get to the paint where she does not fear contact and finishes in spite of it. It’s no wonder that Amisha’s phone is already ringing with next-level suitors. There will be many more.
