Plenty of talented 2024s are left on the board for coaches to see, and I’d like to throw their names out before I head to Chicago tomorrow.
Few lead guards in the state have a similar skillset to Rankin. The Wisconsin Lutheran guard has a knack for beating her initial defender off the dribble and then making good reads as she gets downhill toward the basket. She’s a tough shot maker, and whichever staff ends up with her will be comfortable with the ball in her hands while the shot clock winds down.
The newly minted state champion is one of the more intelligent players in Wisconsin. She runs offenses well, but I want to discuss what she does on the defensive end. She’s got more range than you’d expect from a 5-8 guard and tends to get her hands in passing lanes more often than not. If she’s against small-school competition or anywhere in AAU, Cooper makes an impact defensively. Cooper is also a kid who can space the floor well beyond the 3-point line and has punished defenses this past AAU season for helping off her.
Evelyn Tripp Evelyn Tripp 5'9" | CG Sparta | 2024 State WI
The Sparta product is a name some small school coaches may not have considered for a while due to her injury, but I want to remind everyone who she is on the floor. She’s improved significantly each year she’s been at Sparta and brings qualities that coaches would want on their roster. Tripp’s a 5-9 wing and well-above-average athlete. I remember her and her teammate Keyah Strop Keyah Strop 5'7" | CG River Falls | 2024 State WI playing at the top of her team’s press last summer and saw the effort and speed those two covered ground with, and it’s stuck with me ever since. I also think she’s a kid who’ll get better at shooting because of all the contested looks she has to take at Sparta. She could be a small school gem.
Lauren Capstran Lauren Capstran 5'7" | CG Franklin | 2024 State WI
Capstran has been a part of one of the better Franklin teams in recent memory this past year and won their first outright Southeast Conference Title in over a decade. The 5-9 wing is an extremely helpful kid, and her value is more significant than most people realize. Yes, she’s an accomplished shooter and understands how to get her shots, but she’s rarely out of position. On the defensive end, she isn’t like some of these kids with extreme length who can routinely jump passing lanes, but she doesn’t get beat often. Her ability to keep her assignment in front is excellent, and she’s been a part of talented defensive groups in high school and AAU.
