The Sanford Sports Academy’s Who’s Next Combine was full of kids who demonstrate the skills necessary to play the point guard position, an essential spot that orchestrates a team’s offense and gets after it on the defensive end as well. Here are my top 5 floor generals who demonstrated the intangibles and talent necessary to play the point guard position.
Class of 2024
Stevie Wittler Stevie Wittler 5'7" | CG Sully Buttes | 2024 State SD – Sully Buttes – 5’7″ G – Class of 2024
Stevie is a true point guard who operates effectively in a dribble-drive offense and creates opportunities for others to score with her ability to get to the basket and her excellent vision. In transition, she does a great job of drawing defenders before dishing it off to others to finish the run. In the half-court setting, she can create gaps with her ball-handling skills and downhill approach in order to get to the basket or draw help and kick out to the open girl. Stevie is a complete point guard who can knock down the 3, use her excellent passing skills to find shots for her teammates, and get to the rim and finish with ease off the dribble. On defense, she played hard all day and made it tough for opposing guards to get to the rim or find any space.
Hannah Leverson Hannah Leverson 5'4" | PG Sisseton | 2024 State SD – Sisseston – 5’5″ G – Class of 2024
Hannah gets the nod as the top point guard in the combine. She demonstrated vision and instincts well beyond the high school level and sees areas and opportunities on the floor that many other athletes simply do not. A true dribble-drive point guard that knows how to operate a motion offense she is constantly moving without the ball, getting teammates organized, and finding ways to get her own shot up or create one for a teammate. She has a quick release on her jump shot, a very effective step-back, and is one of the most consistent shooters in South Dakota basketball. A recent commit to Minnesota State Hannah is bound to do big things operating the floor at the next level!
Taylor Watson Taylor Watson 5'8" | CG Florence - Henry | 2024 State SD – Florence-Henry – 5’9″ G – Class of 2024
Taylor has had an excellent summer and continues to trend upward for the 2024 guards. She showed off excellent fundamentals during the skills portion of the combine and has a great mix of skill and athleticism. With one of the best first steps in the state, she does a great job getting to the rim to score as well as drawing the defense and finding posts on the weakside or shooters on the perimeter with a pass. She has an excellent ability to score the basketball in transition and gets out and operates in the full court very effectively. On the defensive end she can defend other people’s best players and was one of the best on-ball defenders at the combine.
Brooklyn Koll Brooklyn Koll 5'5" | PG Sioux Falls Roosevelt | 2025 State SD – SF Roosevelt – 5’5″ G – Class of 2025
Brooklyn had a really nice showing at the Who’s Next Combine and was an all-around talented guard that proved her worth on both ends. Her level of competitiveness and desire to make plays for her team in the 5 on 5 live sessions stood out and she has a lot of really nice intangibles that elevate her own game as well as the play of her teammates. Solid handles, a solid outside shooting game, and great movement without the basketball round out a really nice offensive skillset for Brooklyn. She was the most impressive perimeter rebounder on both ends of the floor and does the little things from a leadership and statistical standpoint that make a point guard special.
Maya Nelson Maya Nelson 5'5" | CG Sioux Falls Christian | 2025 State SD – SF Christian – 5’7″ G – Class of 2025
Maya is one of the most fundamentally sound players in the state and she demonstrated this once again at the combine. She may not have the flash that some other guards do but she has something more important, fundamental skill and a really high basketball IQ. This kid knocks intangibles out of the park and demonstrates great leadership, energy, and teamwork. You could see her making those around her better all day through her leadership abilities and her ability to find ways to make her teammates better. She has impressive handles, handles pressure well, and does an excellent job reading the defense to find the open girl. On defense, she gets after it every single play and competes hard to help her squad get stops.
