So, the people I talk about today may commit tonight. However, I want to talk about a few seniors who aren’t committed to playing basketball at the next level.
Lauren Capstran Lauren Capstran 5'7" | CG Franklin | 2024 State WI
Capstran has consistently contributed to successful teams in high school and AAU. The Franklin native is a gritty defender who plays physically on the perimeter and has the strength to battle high school post players in a pinch. Capstran is also an above-average shooter who can change the course of the game if she’s given too much space on the perimeter. The fact that she finds ways to be successful without the ball in her hands should be something that will help her find ways to be productive at the next level.
Ava R Hanson
The Oshkosh North guard loves getting downhill. If she can put pressure on defenses by getting into the paint, that’s what she’ll do. I also like her ability to cut through defenses when she gets into the paint. She has good footwork, which allows her to make euro steps work around the basket and convert layups off it. She’s also one of the more aggressive off-ball defenders. She’s waiting for a kid to throw any lofted pass her way so she can try to pick it off. Hanson does an excellent job of assuring there isn’t a release valve for opposing offenses to backtrack and get the ball back around halfcourt easily to reset their offense.
Brenna Gehri Brenna Gehri 5'7" | PG Oshkosh West | 2024 State WI
Gehri played with the talented Purple Aces 17u National team, who went undefeated last summer. Gehri slotted into a role that included defending and spacing the floor for the guards. However, there aren’t many kids as athletic as her and still available in her class. Like every Oshkosh West kid, she’s been coached well on where she needs to be defensively to make plays, and she has the instincts to make things happen on that end of the floor. If I had to guess, she’s someone kids aren’t happy about having as their primary defender.
McKenna Shipman McKenna Shipman 5'7" | SG Colfax | 2024 State WI
Shipman’s wired to score the basketball. She can operate off the dribble and score at all levels, which is less common than you might imagine. Shipman also has the recent success of leading her Colfax team to the D3 State Tournament when few expected them to win a sectional semifinal. She’s as dangerous of a scorer as anyone in Western Wisconsin, and she seems to solve problems on the fly well. If you’re looking for an under-the-radar team, look no further than Colfax, and if you’re looking for an under-the-radar player, look no further than Shipman.
