Continue ReadingThe Rebels are no stranger to the big stage, with a recent fifth place finish at state and some could say a snub at the prior year’s finish as they were ranked as high as 4th in the state. The Rebels bring back notable talent Mataeya Mathern Mataeya Mathern 6'0" | SG Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier | 2024 State ND who’s a top 10 talent in the state and some other key contributors to last year’s squad. They lose starting PG and prominent talent Kiara Jangula but gain a notable young class coming up that’s been slowly getting J.V and Varsity time. In my opinion the Rebels are in the rougher district of region 1 and one of the reason’s that make it tough is over the past 6 years a team from that district has made a state appearance.
Taking a look at the team that’s returning we have to mention Mathern again. Ranked #7 currently with our scouts at prep hoops for talent in the state of North Dakota and overall, possibly the #1 player in class B Mathern is a do it all kind of player. She’s got a D1 work ethic and makes any coaches job easier. She’s got a motor on her and can play the entire game it seems without breaking a sweat. She’s dynamic on the court reading the offense for easy turnovers that she converts to 2. A 3-level scorer that has really shown her range as of late though it’s not her go to as that’s attacking the rim with a quick first step and pro hop creating space at the rim. She’s a superb talent that you’ve got to watch if you haven’t already.
Another notable senior returning will be Abby Mathern Abby Mathern 5'6" | SG Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier | 2024 State ND . Mathern has played varsity for the Rebels for the past 3 years and is no stranger to what it takes to win. A strong-willed player that’s got a nice-looking jump shot. What I like most about Abby is that she’s a work horse. A player that’s not afraid to dive on the floor for loose balls and can be a bit unpredictable when scouting against her. I’d like her to be a bit more consistent on a nightly basis. I think she’s a player that can go for 10 plus on any given night as teams often forget that she can shoot from deep. She’s a wild card that I think could propel this Rebel squad to State heights again.
Other notable contributors to the squad are Libby Mathern Libby Mathern CG Edgely/Kulm/Montpelier | 2025 State ND – A quick twitch guard that’s a solid defender and overall 3-level scorer. She’s got length, strength and knows how to handle the rock in the open court. Riley Teske and Anna Schlecht both notable J.V to Varsity bound players that have made a nice impact on their defensive development will be looked to for more playing time this year as well.
Overall conclusion… This Rebel squad is still to be feared. They’ve got a solid group of ladies that are coming up and they have a taste for success. I think they come out this season with even more to prove and make another push at a state title. Their biggest opponents this year will be Kidder County and LaMoure when we talk district 2… I’ll through Medina on that list as well if they can stay healthy all year. I predict the Rebels take district 2 again, but it’s a close fight till the end with how competitive the layout is.
