One state remains – the Peach State – and it is one notably rich in high school girls basketball talent. A large number of the state’s high school standouts will converge on the foothills of north Georgia’s mountains at the LakePoint Sports complex in Cartersville – northwest of Atlanta.
We conclude our preview series of this year’s Georgia Top 250 Expo by looking at those who are seeking to conclude their high school careers with exclamation points.
The 2022-23 campaign was a banner one for Cornish and her 5A Jaguars. She became the fourth woman in the history of Maynard Jackson HS to reach the 1,000-point plateau. She led the Jaguars to a 26-2 record last season and a berth in the 5A state semifinals. Cornish tallied 18 points in that state semifinal contest against Kell. When it is not the red and gold of Maynard Jackson she is sporting, she runs on the travel circuit with Zone 6 Celtics Black. Among her many strong attributes that poses problems for opponents is how quickly she can get a shot up with the ball and her high hoops IQ.

Speaking of veteran standouts who will wear the colors of a 7A school in 2023-24, one must take note of Williams. She was part of a 2022-23 Peachtree Ridge rendition that finished with a 21-7 record. She stands at an even six feet and can play any of the three positions in the frontcourt – at the three, four or five. That six feet of stature Williams possesses can come in useful when looking to do work on either glass. She plays with a heads-up attitude and on defense that can mean turning defense into offense and finishing strong at the basket.
If one thought the even six feet of Williams was a lot to contend with, how is the 6-foot-1 stature of Lucas? She plays for a 7A school as well in the Comets of South Gwinnett. Lucas is another who displays her versatility with her ability to play various positions in the frontcourt – either as a pure five or as a four or three. Add a potent wingspan to go along with her height advantage and she is difficult to score points on in the interior. Lucas will also put forth a great deal of effort into rebounding and those offensive boards will often translate into two-point putbacks.
