Here is my recap of the Trojan Storm Winter Classic that took place at Meridian HS.
First Round:
The first round consisted of all of the games being within 10 points of each other. All the teams played well on defense, which caused the low scoring affairs. Squalicum took on unbeaten Bellevue Christian and held the lead throughout the game. The Storm were able to hold on to hand the Vikings their first loss of the season. Mari Binning Mari Binning 5'8" | CG Squalicum | 2024 State WA led the way with 14 points and Makayla Heaton Makayla Heaton 5'8" | CG Squalicum | 2024 State WA contributed 11. Blaine took on Overlake and relied on senior Deja Dube to lead the Borderrites. She scored 18 points in Blaine’s 47-42 win. The host Meridian took on Stanwood in a game where both teams played tough defense and struggled to hit shots. Stanwood would come away with the win, 33-23. In the final game of the first round, Friday Harbor would defeat Sultan 46-40.
Semi-Finals:
Stanwood would absolutely dominate Friday Harbor in the first semi-final game, 62-10. They would advance to the championship game to face the winner of Squalicum and Blaine. Squalicum would come out to a big lead in the first half, leading 31-7. The Storm would finish the game winning 55-33 behind Mari Binning Mari Binning 5'8" | CG Squalicum | 2024 State WA ‘s 18 points.
Championship / 3rd Place Games:
Squalicum and Stanwood would meet up in the championship for the Trojan Storm Winter Classic. This was a back and forth game the entire contest. Whenever the Storm was able to get a 10/12 point lead, Stanwood would march right back into the game and make it a close one. 2027 Addison Kettman Addison Kettman 5'10" | PF Squalicum | 2027 WA would lead the Storm with 10 points, Mari Binning Mari Binning 5'8" | CG Squalicum | 2024 State WA would have 9 points in a game where Squalicum had many players score. The Storm would get the upset and win 43-38 to be crowned the champions of the Trojan Storm Winter Classic.
