Mt. Vernon is off to a great season at 20-4 after getting a win against Carbondale in the Mid-Winter Classic. Pollard and the Lady Indians played a 1-2-2 press and forced a bunch of turnovers. She is what you would call a legit point guard. She assisted on nine of Melaina Zedalis’s points where Zedalis was able to catch and shoot. Pollard didn’t score her first point until the second quarter. Pollard ended the game 15 points, six assists, two rebounds, and four steals. She hit 2-3 at the free-throw line. Pollard is a multifaceted guard. She averages 10.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and three steals for the season. I saw her play against Centralia she didn’t have the best game from the field, but was able to find her way to the free-throw line. She shot 10-14 from the line, she also came away with three steals. She finished with 13 points.

Melaina Zedalis was another big part of Mt. Vernon’s win. She poured in 24 points. While making two 3-pointers each half. She also had three steals. She seemed to be open in off-ball situations and was able to catch-and-shoot. 13 of her points were assisted on. Getting nine on 3-pointers, and four on the break. Offensively Carbondale didn’t do much to stop her from scoring. Zedalis is averaging the second most points on her team with 17.3 and 6.2 rebounds a game for the season. Last night (1/29) she led her team with 20 points, and she was the most consistent offensive option most of the night. She grabbed five boards and came up with four big steals.

Aside from the monster game, senior Amayah Doyle Amayah Doyle 5’10” | PF Carterville | 2024 IL had with her 33 points. Khamari Jackson had 15 points, three rebounds, one assist, and a steal. Massac County was a hot team at the Mid-Winter Classic, going undefeated until the loss to Carterville. Carterville was able to keep Massac’s front court from taking over the game. She was able to find her way to the basket multiple times throughout that game.
Ayva Rush came out scoring in a big win vs Carbondale 55-30. She finished with 24 points, scoring 11 in the first half. Defensively her team ran a 1-3-1 trap in the half-court, and she was able to deflect a number of passes throughout the game. She ended the game with four steals. She also came up big on the glass. Getting six rebounds, with four of them being offensive rebounds. Her team has been on quite the hot streak winning six straight games. Rush said that she has amassed over 1000 career points in two years with her being injured all of last year.

These analyses span the entire month of January. The high school season is coming to a close and play is starting to tighten up because of playoffs looming.
