Players were divided into five regional teams—Central, Coastal, Metro, Northeast, and West—based on where they live in the state. Each region held tryouts throughout June to select their rosters.

Underclassmen made up about a third of the players, and here are the ones that stood out to me the most.

Alicia is a strong left-handed guard who's great at getting to the basket and finishing through contact. When she lowers her shoulder and attacks the rim she is is hard to stay in front of. She finishes at a high level with both hands, making it hard to tell she's a natural lefty. Once she breaks down the initial line of defense and gets to the paint she plays very smart, making composed decisions with the ball. On the other end, I saw her team playing a half court trapping defense, and Alicia played the passing lanes perfectly.

It's much easier to make a positive impact on a team when you have the ball in your hands. But Mallorie knows her favorite spots on the court and moves without the ball at a high level, allowing herself to set up for favorable shots. Mallorie shoots the ball with loads of confidence, getting into her shot with no hesitation at all whether it be wide open or slightly contested. She will be up for the challenge when she steps onto the court for her first high school game.

Elizabeth's game is extremely impressive, especially considering her age, on both ends of the floor. Defensively, her impact in the paint results in opposing players not even wanting to attempt to take on the challenge of scoring on her. Then on the other end, Elizabeth does well at carving out space for herself to score and draw contact. Entering her sophomore year at Taunton High School, she is going to give opposing teams in the Hockomock League troubles.

As the younger half of a dynamic duo in the post between herself and Elizabeth Benington Lynch, she played at an impressive level in this tournament. She does a good job of consistently making her presence felt in the paint on the offensive end. Her size and positioning allow her to grab rebounds on both ends, score easy baskets, and block opponents' shots.

Regan stood out to me at this event as a classic "3-and-D player". She's a high IQ player that knows exactly what spot she needs to be in at all times in help defense. I noticed a few times bigger and taller girls attempting to push her around in the paint, but Regan did a good job of standing her ground and not bowing down to the larger player. Her toughness and awareness made her a reliable presence on both ends of the floor.
