Guards Aplenty at the Frisco League Tournament

In Thursday's semifinals, Dixon defeated top-seeded Crocker and Iberia defeated Stoutland. Here is a look at a group of guards who caught our attention while watching the Frisco League Tournament.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='1234092' first='Inez' last='Ballard'] (Dixon): The 5'9" 2029 guard showed why she was one of the top freshmen in the state as she scored 29 points in the Tigers' victory over No. 1 seed Crocker in the semifinals. She is a potent three-level scorer, but her shooting range extends out to the volleyball line. She can hit them from long distance and she shoots it with supreme confidence. She can also maneuver herself into the lane for twisting buckets. She also makes her teammates better as she repeatedly set them up with open shots.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='803082' first='Lexi' last='Ament'] (Crocker): A 5'9" 2027 guard who surpassed the 1,000-point plateau early in the tournament. The young lefty is an excellent scorer from all three levels. She was shooting it well from 3-point range with her high-arching jumper. She also drives it well and can also create contact to get herself to the free throw line.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='999525' first='Grace' last='Martin'] (Iberia): A 5'9" 2028 guard who is another very talented young player in the Frisco League. She has a smooth looking 3-point shot in which the net barely moves when she swishes it through. She has good length and athleticism to go along with her good positional size. She is disruptive at the top of the zone defense with her constant movement, which nets deflections and steals.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='874625' first='Mallory' last='Moss'] (Richland): A 2027 guard who was aggressively attacking the basket in the game I watched against Stoutland. She has a real scorer's mentality as she looked to create off the dribble and also through contact. She will also hit the 3-pointer if the defense gives her a little extra room.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Aaliyah Ford (Dixon): A 2029 guard who has good athleticism and who plays a strong overall floor game. She has smooth handles and she made some nifty passes. She threaded the needle with a nice bounce pass through a zone defense in the first round game. She can also shoot it from 3-point range. She can also impact the game on the defensive end. She jumped out and blocked a perimeter jumper on one play.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Mallory Shaw (Stoutland): A 2026 guard who impressed me very much with her overall offensive skill set. She was creating off the dribble, moving without the ball with sharp cuts. and knocking down jumpers off the dribble while using the backboard. She also hit a pair of 3-pointers off the catch. She was also active on the boards as she was picking up offensive rebounds andputbacks.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Jayla Piggott (Iberia): A 2027 guard who has a nice perimeter shot and a good feel for the game. She made multiple 3-pointers in the victory over Stoutland in the semifinals. She also used a shot fake to get into the lane to hit a runner off the dribble. She also made multiple hustle plays to get offensive rebounds and loose balls.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Keely Gorman (Licking): A 2027 point guard who did a good job of getting downhill into the lane with her dribble penetration. She stayed aggressive as she was constantly probing the defense for open driving lanes. She also had a nice jumper from the elbow off the dribble. She was also very active on the top of the zone defense.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Jordan Young (Dixon): A 2028 guard who plays a solid overall game. She plays well without the ball with her cutting ability. She is a solid ball handler who can penetrate and kick the ball out to an open shooter. She can also go into the lane and post up and get a bucket. Her defensive instincts are also very good as she played the passing lanes to get steals.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Ella Corneilson (Stoutland): A 2028 point guard who really plays with a pass-first mentality. She sees the court well and she dropped some nifty dimes throughout the two games that I watched her. She can also dribble her way through a full court pressure defense. She asserted herself offensively with some big baskets in the first-round victory over Richland.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
