Saints Collide: RVA Hoops Turns Up the Heat

Few things in high school basketball rival a crosstown showdown, and this one delivered. Virginia's two "Saints" went head-to-head in a nail-biter that came down to the final possession to decide a winner.    From warm-ups onward, freshman guard Eva Stumpf showed she was locked in and ready. Her energetic, deliberate pre-game routine translated into a steady on-court performance. She helped establish balance for her team early and knocked down two timely threes in the third quarter when her team needed scoring. Stumpf is earning an increasingly prominent role in the lineup—a trajectory that could prove vital for the team's season ahead.     While anchor post players have become increasingly rare in today's game, Lexi Gillikin is poised to bring that style back to prominence. She impacts winning on both sides of the ball, providing solid interior defense and controlling the glass while also working effectively in the post with a smooth left-handed drop step. Beyond her inside game, Gillikin has shown she can deliver in clutch moments, hitting big shots when competitive games hang in the balance.     This reliable floor general takes ownership of leading her team on both sides of the ball. She's effective working off ball screens and shows excellent court vision, consistently putting teammates in positions to thrive. Her command of offensive sets and play-calling is evident throughout. On defense, she leverages her physical tools and vocal leadership to disrupt opponents. Mady's first-half performance was highlighted by a buzzer-beating shot as time expired.    Team Breakdown    St. Catherine's junior point guard Savanah Spalding set the tone with her relentless energy and pace control throughout the game. Her stamina allows her to dictate tempo on both sides of the ball, while her ability to shift gears keeps opponents off balance. Defensively, she anticipates passing lanes well, and offensively, she uses her speed to blow by defenders in transition and half-court sets, always looking to turn the corner and attack.     Lewis set a strong defensive tone early in the game. Despite her smaller stature, she uses her wingspan and lateral mobility to effectively guard larger opponents. Her perimeter defense is solid as well. On offense, she's an intelligent player who moves purposefully without the ball and knocks down open shots. Lewis demonstrates high basketball IQ by running inside-out sets patiently, allowing her teammates to be aggressive rather than forcing the issue, and consistently exploiting defensive breakdowns.     When the game needed a spark in the opening minutes, Paxton Raymond delivered, launching her performance with a smooth mid-range jumper that set the tone for her leadership throughout the night. Raymond is a reliable spot-up shooter who thrives under pressure, particularly in late shot-clock situations. Her size is deceiving—she competes for loose balls and crashes the boards with the tenacity of a forward.
