757 Girls Basketball Players to Watch This Summer

After tomorrow, there will be no more girls high school basketball in Virginia. The lights in the gym will go dark. The balls will be put away. Jerseys will be turned in. For many players, the high school season will be over. However, the basketball won't stop.The ladies will shift from representing their schools to representing their summer league and travel programs. New teammates, new systems, new coaches, and new levels of competition.   For me, that means something else as well. More basketball, and more opportunities to observe players in different environments alongside different teammates, against different styles, and facing different levels of talent.   Summer basketball often reveals things the high school season can't. Who can adapt, lead, and thrive outside of a familiar system. Here are a few players I plan to keep a close eye on this summer.      Season Snapshot Posting a 14 points-per-game average. The undersized and often underestimated point guard proved she could consistently produce for her team throughout the high school season.   Skill Set Toliver has the ability to get to the rim when needed. She also is adept at facilitating the offense and keeping teammates involved. When defenses collapse, she can make opponents pay from the perimeter with her outside shooting.   Intangibles Possessing the toughness required at the point guard position, Toliver competes hard and shows the poise needed to run a team.   Summer Evaluation The summer circuit should provide an interesting look at how Toliver fares in more open floor situations. Especially against different defensive looks and higher levels of competition.     Season Snapshot As the saying goes, you can't teach height. Ducharne certainly didn't look out of place when she stepped on the floor. Playing significant minutes as a freshman for a loaded Catholic squad.   Skill Set She already shows a natural ability to rebound and contest shots around the basket. Which demonstrates the instincts needed to impact the game in the paint.   Intangibles Ducharne shows promising defensive awareness and the physical presence necessary for the post position.   Summer Evaluation With continued development, the rest of her offensive game has the potential to grow and round her into a more complete post player. A full summer of travel basketball following a deep playoff run should help accelerate that evolution.     Season Snapshot Brehon emerged as a reliable contributor. In additon to serving as a secondary scoring option she showcased the tools of a player who could transition into a full-time point guard role at the next level.   Skill Set A sharpshooting combo guard. Brehon has the ability to stretch defenses with her shooting from beyond the arc. While also showing the vision to find teammates in the open court. Her ability to score and facilitate gives her versatility in the backcourt.   Intangibles Brehon displays the instincts and court awareness of a guard who understands how to impact the game both with and without the ball.   Summer Evaluation With summer basketball often played in a more open environment,. Brehon's speed and court vision should become even more apparent. Facing stronger competition on the travel circuit should provide a good opportunity to evaluate her continued development as a lead guard.     Season Snapshot The Churchland point guard did an admirable job running the offense for the Truckers this past season. At 6'0", Tynes brings rare size to the point guard position and has the ability to see over most opposing guards.   Skill Set Long and rangy, Tynes shows a developing ability to read the floor and distribute the ball effectively. Her height allows her to pass over defenses and initiate the offense. While also pushing the tempo when opportunities present themselves.   Intangibles Tynes displays poise with the ball in her hands and the physical tools to create matchup problems for opposing backcourts. Her size and length give her intriguing potential on both ends of the floor.   Summer Evaluation With summer basketball typically played at a faster pace. Tynes' ability to run an up-tempo offense should translate well. Continued reps against different levels of competition should help accelerate her growth as a floor general.       Season Snapshot Louis established herself as a versatile presence in the post this season. Bringing a skill set that extends beyond traditional interior play.   Skill Set An adept post player with impressive ball-handling ability and a soft passing touch. Possesses the ability to stretch defenses out to the perimeter before finding cutters on the move. Around the basket, keeping her off the glass is a tall order, as she commands constant attention.   Intangibles Louis' rebounding ability allows her to both extend offensive possessions and end them defensively. Serving to make her a consistent presence on the boards.   Summer Evaluation With the open floors and faster pace of summer basketball, it will be interesting to see Louis' complete game come to the forefront as she continues to grow into a more complete player.    Summer basketball can be a great step in a players development. With different teammates a faster pace and higher levels of competition. The summer circuit affords me a different look at a players development.
