Overlooked No More Blue Ridge Talent Demands Attention

The Her Hoop Dreams Combine gave me a firsthand look at something most people overlook. The untapped talent tucked away in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, and it didn't disappoint.   Over 60 girls showed up, and from the opening whistle it was clear: this region has players. Real ones. The kind that don't always get the spotlight, but absolutely deserve it.   Several stood out not just for what they did statistically, but for how they did it. Skill. Toughness. IQ. Presence. The intangibles that separate players from prospects. These are those girls.    Overview: A smooth, versatile guard/wing who comfortably operates across multiple positions. Camblos showed the ability to impact the game from the perimeter while keeping defenses on edge.   Production: Consistently able to get downhill, Camblos created scoring opportunities for herself and others. Whether pushing in transition or operating in the half court, she found ways to be effective without forcing the action.   Skill Set: Camblos impressed with her polished footwork and ability to attack the rim from the perimeter. She moves well in space, running the floor with ease and showing positional flexibility (1–3). Her passing both into the post and around the arc, highlighted strong court vision and feel. She's confident shooting from the perimeter and isn't hesitant to let it fly when given space.   Projection: As her shot selection becomes more consistent and her defensive intensity continues to develop. Camblos has the offensive tools to contribute at the next level. The versatility and feel are already there refinement will elevate her impact.      Overview: A traditional post presence who embraces the physical side of the game, Weakley brings a throwback interior skill set that remains highly valuable.   Production: Weakley was effective on the block, consistently establishing position and converting around the rim. She also made her presence felt on the glass, generating second-chance opportunities and securing key defensive rebounds.   Skill Set: Comfortable with her back to the basket, Weakley operates with solid footwork and strong positioning on the blocks. Her post package allows her to score through contact and finish in tight spaces, making her a difficult matchup inside. She competes on the boards and isn't afraid to battle for extra possessions.   Projection: Weakley has the tools to develop into an effective center at the next level, especially as traditional post play continues to be a premium in certain systems. Continued growth in maturity and overall consistency will be key, but the foundation is there for her to be a sought-after post in the Class of 2027.     Overview: One of the most impressive performers at the camp, Wright's play earned her a move up to the high school group—where she didn't look out of place.   Production: Wright made her mark as a perimeter threat, consistently stretching the floor and showing confidence well beyond her years. She impacted the game without needing the ball, finding space and making herself available.   Skill Set: Already equipped with a quick, fluid release, Wright is a confident shooter who isn't afraid to let it fly from deep. She moves well without the ball and has a natural feel for getting open. Her competitive edge stands out she showed zero hesitation taking shots against bigger, more experienced players.   Projection: As she continues to physically mature and tighten her ball-handling, Wright has the foundation for a highly productive high school career and beyond. The confidence, shooting ability, and fearlessness are already there—now it's about continued development and consistency.     Overview: Another middle school standout, Fowler projects as a point guard at the next level, showing early signs of developing into a complete lead guard.   Production: Fowler balanced scoring and facilitation effectively, demonstrating the ability to both create her own opportunities and set up teammates. She played with poise and control, rarely looking sped up.   Skill Set: Her court vision stands out immediately—Fowler consistently reads the floor well, using her ability to penetrate and collapse the defense before making the right pass. Her decision-making reflects a high basketball IQ, and she shows a natural feel for running an offense. As a scorer, she can contribute when needed, adding to her versatility as a guard.   Projection: While she can be physically overmatched on the defensive end at times, continued strength development and physical maturity should allow her to hold her own. With her IQ, vision, and dual-threat ability, Fowler has the foundation to grow into a true floor general.    The Blue Ridge Mountain and Western part of Virginia may be overlooked, but its clear that the talent coming out of the region is worthy of recognition.
