Call it the combo wing, the most versatile players in the game. Virginia has a host of talented players that can rock every perimeter position. We will take a look at a few that should have a big impact as the season begins.
Maikya Simmons – 5’7″ – Bishop O’Connell – 2020
Maikya SimmonsMaikya has been the glue player for a couple of years now for Bishop O’Connell playing at a high level year round transitioning from the WCAC to the EYBL in the spring and summer. Look for her to be the leader for the Knights run in the post season as they try and lock in one of the top four seeds. She can score from anywhere on the perimeter and has shown good speed when attacking the basket, getting to the hoop before help defenders have time to respond. I should be a really good season for her individually.
Messiah Hunter – 6’2″ – Hopewell – 2021
Messiah HunterMessiah is playing at an All American level right now and has really upped her confidence level. She has the size to match up defensively against any position and is a mismatch for most guards she will face this season. She has a pretty good handle and can bring the ball down and start the offense. She attacks and finishes well and has a nice midrange pullup as well. Despite having a full arsenal of perimeter skills her size allows her to go inside at times playing with her back to the basket.
Lee Volker – 6’0″ – Paul VI – 2021
Lee VolkerLee plays with a lot of energy and leaves everything out on the floor. She has a really good long range shot and is one of the best shooters in the state at six feet and over. She has good vision and is always a threat as she moves well without the ball in her hands. Paul VI has been one of the better teams around for around a decade and they have lost a lot to graduation, Lee is the key if the Panthers are to remain amongst the elites.
Sherese Pittman – 6’1″ – Stewart School – 2021
Sherese PittmanSherese has been playing at a high level for years. The Spartans strength of schedule has kept her out of the national spotlight but, she is not a secret to those who pay close attention. As a sophomore she has put up multiple 30 plus point games and multiple 20 plus rebound games. This season the double-double should be the norm with her games. Transitioning the stats into victories will require her to trust her teammates and make them better. She should have a good season and it will be fun watching her next stage of development.
Alayna Arnolie – 5’8″ – James Madison – 2022
Alayna ArnolieAlayna can go from point guard to wing in a single posession. Having her twin sister Grace by her side with a similar skillset is a luxury as she isn’t required to be on the ball every play. She is a playmaker with good vision and a very good shooter. Her perimeter defense is very good and she runs the floor hard even when not in the play. She also makes good decisions and is unselfish in transition.
