The Mascoutah Tourney wrapped up Sunday with another great year. We had some of the same expected results, O’Fallon won for the 3rd year in a row, but there were some surprises too. Nashville taking down East St Louis and Belleville West beating Mater Dei were big wins for both programs. The final day results were as follows: Consolation final: Lift for Life Academy 49 Belleville East 44 5th Place Mater Dei 68 East St Louis 63 3rd Place Belleville West 52 Nashville 27 Championship O’Fallon 45 Highland 40 The All Tourney teams were 2nd Team Shannon Lampe Mater Dei Alyssa Cole Nashville Amelia Bell O’Fallon Shania Nunn Belleville West Jailah Pelly East St Louis 1st Team Kayla Gordon O’Fallon Ellie Brown Highland Bella LaPorta Highland Claire Toennies Mater Dei Tyana Lovelace O’Fallon Lampe and Pelly were having similar tournaments for their teams through 3 games. Solid efforts, but not spectacular by their standards. Pelly was averaging 12 per game and Lampe 10. Both ladies exploded in the 5th place game. Pelly had 25 points including 4 three pointers and Lampe led her team to the victory with 24. Lampe hit both of her attempts from 3-point range and was 10/11 from the charity stripe. Lampe also had 8 boards and 6 assists in a well rounded game. Both players have a similar long and wiry build and are very athletic. Lampe is a 2020 and has a little bit more of a refined game at this point but Pelly is 2023 with tremendous upside. Alyssa Cole had a very productive tournament for Nashville. She had big games to start the event with 26 and 19 points in two wins. She averaged 17 over the 4 games and continues to show her improved wing skills. Alyssa has worked hard to turn herself into a power wing instead of an under sized post. She is more comfortable handling the ball and has continued to improve her range on the jump shot. She is certainly a 2022 to keep an eye on over the next two years. Amelia Bell and Shania Nunn both had a productive tournament for their SWC teams. Nunn didn’t light up the scoring column until getting 14 in the last game, but she is an excellent all around player. Shania can pass effectively out of double teams and is an excellent rebounder. Bell helped lead O’Fallon to the championship by averaging 11 points per game. She consistently runs the floor hard and is a physical presence on the defensive end of the floor. She can guard multiple positions and rebounds well. Claire Toennies was a consistent scorer for Mater Dei. She played some of her best basketball in averaging 19 per game. Claire knows how to play within their system and where to find shots. When she gets them, she doesn’t miss very often. Claire is extremely consistent from 10-17 feet. She owns the mid range. Ellie Brown and Bella LaPorta helped Highland to a 2nd place finish. Ellie is the driver of the bus. She directs traffic and leads the team. She has always been able to score and showed that by hitting double figures the first 3 games. She handles pressure well and has a nice stroke on her perimeter shots. Bella is a 6ft tall athletic post. She plays volleyball and shows that bounce in her basketball game. She averaged 11 points and 10 rebounds per game for the tourney. Bella can finish well in the paint with either hand. O’Fallon won the championship for the 3rd year in a row. They were led by senior point guard Kayla Gordon and junior post Tyana Lovelace. Gordon runs the show and is excellent at pushing the ball in transition. She has a knack for getting in the lane and finishing. She has become a better 3-point shooter and is hitting 40% for the season. Lovelace has really come on for Coach Knolhoff this season. For the tourney she averaged 13 points and 9 rebounds. As many top players do, she stepped it up when it counted most. In the championship game against Highland she had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Tyana is very strong in the paint. This was another well run Mascoutah invitational with many quality teams and players.
