A select few basketball players are making their college decisions. Allison Sherrer is one of the talented athletes that recently made a college choice. She will attend school and play basketball for Calvin College. Sherrer is a skilled shooting guard from Williamston High School. The senior played grassroots basketball with Michigan Triple Threat. We recently caught up with Allison Sherrer to talk about her recruitment and commitment to Calvin College. Question: What was the recruiting process like for you? Allison Sherrer: The recruiting process was a lot of things, it was exciting to be asked to play my favorite sport at the collegiate level. It was stressful because I found several colleges that would be a good fit for me and having to pick just one was very difficult. But most of all it was fun, I enjoyed seeing the different college campuses and meeting the coaches and players. Question: What were you looking for in a school? Allison Sherrer: First of all, I wanted to find a college with an exceptional science/pre medical program. I discovered I wanted to go to a small college, because it feels like more of a family and community atmosphere. If the size and academics correlated, then athletics were a huge bonus that came along with it. Luckily, I was able to find all of this at Calvin College. Question: What separated Calvin College from the rest? Allison Sherrer: When I first stepped on to the campus, I felt like I was at home. It was so pretty and everyone was so welcoming. They were top ranked academically, which is very important, and had a good reputation in basketball. Question: What are you most excited about as far as college basketball? Allison Sherrer: I am most excited for the team atmosphere. Throughout high school, I have always been a part of an amazing team with great chemistry, and going into college I am hoping that will happen again. Being a part of a team is one of the most important things because they are there for you and you are there for them. They are people who you can fall back on and who have your back no matter what. Question: Do you have goals for your time at Calvin College? Allison Sherrer: Calvin will help me with my academic and basketball career. My goal for academics is to take advantage of the academic opportunities Calvin offers and to reach my goal in a career in medicine. As for basketball, during my sophomore and junior year we were projected to go far in the Michigan High School Class B tournament. I was able to play with outstanding athletes like [player_tooltip player_id="2256" first="Maddie" last="Watters"], [player_tooltip player_id="2259" first="Allison" last="Peplowski"], Kenzie Lewis, and many others. My junior year we labeled it as our year. We wanted to win the state championship so bad and obtain the rings. But we didn’t get the ending we truly wanted, injuries sidelined many of our teammates and our dreams of holding the final trophy. I have always wanted to win a championship, and one of my goals is to try to help my team and the rest of Calvin win a National Championship. Question: What are your strengths as a player? Allison Sherrer: I am able to see the court and adjust my game accordingly. Although I am only 5’5”, I am unafraid to match up with players of any size. I am a hard worker who is willing to put in the time to not just better myself, but my teammates as well, and along with motivating them to work hard and achieve what they are striving for. Finally, I feel I am coachable, willing to listen and learn from my coaches. Question: What advice would you give kids trying to reach your level of success in basketball? Allison Sherrer: Work hard. Don’t give up. I have spent literally the last three years working every day on my game both mentally and physically. Most of all, I love the game of basketball, and in order to succeed in anything, you have to be passionate about it. During my sophomore year I didn’t play much at all. But because of that I am the player that I am today. Not playing a lot fueled me to work hard and not give up. I made it my goal to play more next year and help my team out as much as I could because that is what they deserved. They deserved to have their teammates work and help reach for the goals they committed to.
