The 2019-20 season has come and gone, and each year we see different players rise up and take on expanded roles for their respective teams. Sometimes freshmen are able to step in right away and make a big impact. Older players take on a bigger role. For the class of 2021, this upcoming year is huge. Not only is it their final year of high school basketball, but it’s also one more shot at showcasing their game for college coaches. Here’s a few additional players I’ve been able to watch this year who could take a big step forward as a senior. 1. [player_tooltip player_id="49225" first="Rayah" last="Marshall"] – Lynwood Marshall isn’t talked about all that often, but she considered one of the best prospects in the country for her class. Watching her play, it’s easy to see why. She’s got a very versatile skill-set. She can run the floor like a wing and she can play in the paint like a big. She has a decent fadeaway jumper in the low post. Can shoot from the outside. She has solid length on the defensive end, tools to be a defensive force. 2. Tiah Sherman – Narbonne When I first saw Sherman play, what stood out the most was her playmaking ability. She’s a really crafty facilitator who is always looking for her teammates whether it’s in transition or in a half-court set. She averaged 4.8 assists per game this season. She’s also a very good defensive player. In half court sets, she uses fakes well to off her shot. Can shoot from three and can attack the rim. 3. Ameerah Ali – Crenshaw Ali is another standout defensive player. When I first saw her, that was where she did the most of her damage. She picks up defensively at midcourt and plays very strong on-ball defense. She keeps her arms high and slides her feet well. Reads the passing lanes and can start a break with a steal. Offensively, she can shoot from three and can shoot off the dribble. Decent ball-handler and passer. 4. Ivy Scott – Palisades Scott joins a solid incoming senior class at Palisades that includes [player_tooltip player_id="102703" first="Sammie" last="Arnold"] and [player_tooltip player_id="85334" first="Alexis" last="Pettis"]. What stood out the most to me from her game was her play off the dribble. She is comfortable handling the ball and attacking. She has a nice little runner in the lane. She is a pretty strong rebounder who follows her shot and fights for second shot opportunities. Decisive making a move to the rim. 5. Jordyn Jiron – Alemany Jiron is in the mold of real point guard. It’s a tough position to play, but Jiron does it well. She can quarterback the team’s offense and she runs the break well as the primary ball-handler. She is able to find her teammates and get them easy buckets. She doesn’t look to score all that much, but she can if needed. She can defend well on-ball.
