As we look for other ways to cover prospects we thought it would be beneficial to cover players in a way that allows us to cover those we don’t write much about. We will be using the region’s from last season as they were constructed. Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible. We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges. We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2022’s who could be primed for big seasons. [player_tooltip player_id="129016" first="Macy" last="Daufeldt"] - West Liberty With just two seniors on the roster a year ago, many might have been surprised by the success at West Liberty, which included a run to the regional finals. [player_tooltip player_id="129016" first="Macy" last="Daufeldt"] and her Comet teammates, though, believed in each other. Now, with that experience and court-time returning, big things are expected. Daufeldt, a junior-to-be, scored 291 points with 151 rebounds, 72 steals and 41 assists, shooting almost 35 percent from the field and over 30 percent from the three-point line. [player_tooltip player_id="129004" first="Lucy" last="Schaffer"] - North Polk Quietly, [player_tooltip player_id="129004" first="Lucy" last="Schaffer"] was able to post 289 points and 116 rebounds for state runner-up North Polk a season ago. Now, she’ll be more of the focus of opposing defenses. Schaffer shot almost 47 percent from the field, making 27 three-pointers. She also had 59 assists and 51 steals, sinking nearly 70 percent of her 85 free throw attempts. With the experience gained, Schaffer should be poised for even more as a junior. Maddie Nonnemann - Mid-Prairie Mid-Prairie’s Maddie Nonnemann was a standout in all facets of the game as a sophomore, posting 208 points with 93 rebounds, 28 assists and 25 steals. Nonneman made nearly 48 percent of her field goals and also was a 66-percent free throw shooter. She added in 11 made three-pointers on the year for the Golden Hawks. Teagan Schaefer - Williamsburg One would expect even better numbers out of Class of 2022's Teagan Schaefer in the coming year after the Williamsburg prospect played in 21 games as a sophomore. Schaefer scored 175 points with 16 made three-pointers, 65 rebounds, 39 assists and 18 steals. If she can boost her overall shooting from the field and the three-point line, she should be in for a big season. [player_tooltip player_id="163337" first="Sailor" last="Hall"] - West Liberty West Liberty gave North Polk everything they could handle before falling in a regional final last year, just one step away from making it to state. With several returning pieces back, the Comets are poised for big things once more. One of those is Class of 2022’s [player_tooltip player_id="163337" first="Sailor" last="Hall"], who started all 24 games as a sophomore. Hall led the team with 153 rebounds and 75 assists, finishing second with 66 steals. She also had 231 points, shooting 34.5 percent from the field with 20 made triples.
