It’s been a different summer so far to say the least in the world of high school basketball. Grassroots events have largely gotten underway in some parts of the country while others are still on hold. A lot of players have been missing out on a time when they’d usually have ample opportunities to showcase their game for college coaches. With events still pretty much on hold here in California, I’ve used the time to watch film on players that I haven’t quite watched in depth before. Here’s a group of players from the Class of 2021 that I’ve seen both through film that could be players to look out for this upcoming season. I’ll have more groupings of players throughout this month. 1. [player_tooltip player_id="102664" first="Mailey" last="Ballard"] – Valencia Despite basketball being on temporary hiatus, Ballard picked up an offer from LIU a couple of months ago. She’s a versatile player who can play multiple positions. She’s a little interchangeable from playing guard and forward. Her strength lies in her shooting from three an ability to get good looks. Moves well without the ball. Can spot up and can face up. Also has 1-2 dribble pull-up. 2. Tiarah Galvan – Mater Dei Galvan is a combo guard who can act as a scorer/shooter or a playmaker. She’s very quick, especially in the open court. Keeps her head up dribbling and is aware of her surroundings. Can blow past her defender in the halfcourt and get all the way to the rim. She’s a very good shooter from beyond the arc. Does a good job of getting open and squaring up. Sets her feet and has a quick release. 3. [player_tooltip player_id="102685" first="Malinda" last="Vheru"] – Chaminade Vheru is a tough, physical wing. She can put the ball on the floor and bump defenders off on her way to the rim. A strong finisher at the basket. She isn’t afraid of contact and has a knack for diving after lose balls and fighting for rebounds. Can shoot over smaller defenders. Has three-point range. She’s a physical defender who can lock up both on and off ball. 4. [player_tooltip player_id="102701" first="Giselle" last="Martinez"] – Anaheim Martinez is a very mobile big, especially on the defensive end of the court. She slides her feet well and protects the paint. Stays down on her feet and times her blocks well. A very active defender overall; she can even contest shots on the perimeter. She’s a good rebounder and a double digit rebounding threat. Does well as a trailer who can clean up the initial missed shot. 5. [player_tooltip player_id="102704" first="Lauren" last="Shimizu"] – Los Alamitos Shimizu is a knockdown shooter from the three-point line. She has a high-arching shot that is money if she’s open. Very quick release that doesn’t give the defense enough time to recover. Sets her feet well and squares up. Can shoot with defenders rushing at her. She moves well on the arc without the ball and is ready for the pass.
