Up Next Showcase: Looking at a loaded Team 1

Every time Prep Girls Hoops hosts a showcase it seems to happen: One team ends up overloaded with talent. That was certainly the case on Saturday at the Up Next Showcase in Maple Grove where Team 1 was stacked with future stars in Minnesota girls basketball. Trust me when I tell you that the rosters are not manipulated in any way. In fact, they are selected by a computer using an algorithm. I couldn't move a player to a different team even if I wanted to and neither can my colleagues. The formula separates by height so that all of the really tall kids don't end up on one team. Other than that, it's random. As luck would have it, Team 1 had a boatload of exciting prospects who have played with each other extensively. One thing was obvious: They can all play! Listed in order of their jersey numbers at the showcase, here are the standouts.    9 – Expectations were high for Kendra  entering the Up Next Showcase, and she lived up to every one of them. The quarterback of [program_tooltip program_id='712722' first='North' last='Tartan']'s 13U state championship team, Lynch plays with an advanced basketball IQ that is evident from the opening possession. She consistently makes the right read, handles the ball with confidence and delivers passes that keep teammates involved. Her shooting ability further separates her, making her a threat whenever the ball is in her hands. Countless hours of training with Damien Lolar and Robie Tensaie at Verve Basketball have clearly accelerated her development, and she already displays the poise and skill set of a player well beyond her years.     45 – Few players generated as much buzz during the showcase as Sumaiyah. As soon as the 3-on-3 session began, her athleticism and body control immediately stood out. Kunert attacked the basket with confidence, finishing in a variety of ways while making difficult plays look natural. Already standing 5-foot-8 with an explosive frame, she combines bounce, instincts and fluid movement that are uncommon for her age. Just as importantly, she plays with obvious joy and enthusiasm, bringing energy to every possession. She remains early in her development, but the combination of athletic tools and emerging skill makes her one of the most intriguing young prospects we evaluated.     46 – Kaidence continued the strong impression she made throughout the AAU season. A key contributor to [program_tooltip program_id='712722' first='North' last='Tartan']'s state championship team, she brings a rare blend of size, athleticism and versatility for a player entering 8th grade. Reif-Edwards handles the ball comfortably, attacks the rim with confidence and finishes with impressive touch, including a sweet floater that looks so natural. She elevates with ease and impacts the game in a variety of ways rather than fitting into one traditional position. Just as noticeable was the joy she played with throughout the day, making an already impressive all-around performance even more enjoyable to watch.     47 – Although she arrived after the showcase had begun, Ka'Lea  wasted little time making an impression. She combines a strong, physical frame with surprising mobility, running the floor well and handling the ball comfortably in transition. Bigger players who move this fluidly always attract attention, and Williams quickly demonstrated why. Her first trip down the court resulted in an aggressive drive to the basket for two points that immediately established her aggressive mindset. As the day progressed, she did more good things that pointed toward some significant upside. She left a solid impression as an intriguing young prospect whose combination of strength, athleticism and competitiveness gives her an excellent foundation moving forward.     62 – Reese played with a relentless competitive edge from start to finish. Although listed at 5'7, her length allowed her to play much bigger, disrupting passing lanes and competing for every loose ball. Warren displayed an advanced offensive feel as well, using fakes, changes of pace and strong ball-handling skills to create opportunities while also knocking down perimeter shots. She remained locked in throughout the four-hour showcase, never taking a possession off. Her toughness, energy and willingness to compete on both ends consistently stood out, making Warren one of the more impressive performers we saw during the event.     63 – Already carrying a year of varsity experience into 8th grade, Erlande displayed a level of poise and maturity that separated her throughout the showcase. She rarely forces the action, instead allowing the game to come to her while consistently making smart decisions with the basketball. Defensively, she was outstanding, using quick hands, active feet and excellent anticipation to pressure ball handlers and jump passing lanes. Lonsdale's athleticism shows up on both ends of the floor, and her understanding of the game continues to advance rapidly. She has already established herself as one of the premier young prospects in Minnesota's 2031 class.    Even on a Team 1 loaded with future stars, there were other players who managed to get noticed at the Up Next Showcase. #5 [player_tooltip player_id='1884088' first='Katrina' last='Kharin'] is a 2032 guard from Oak View Middle School in Maple Grove. One of the smallest players at the event, she used quality ball handling and good court vision to make an impact. #36 [player_tooltip player_id='1862920' first='Ottilie' last='Mrnak'] of Maple Grove did the same. She also wasn't afraid to let it fly from deep and demonstrated some nice one-on-one ability with the ball in hand. #38 [player_tooltip player_id='1883403' first='Savannah' last='O'Reilly'] is a 2033 guard from Rochester, a strong outside shooter with good form. She played AAU this season for [program_tooltip program_id='712352' first='Air' last='Minnesota'].
