Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2022’s who could be primed for big seasons.
Amaya Davison Amaya Davison 5'5" | PG Des Moines Roosevelt | 2022 State IA – Des Moines Roosevelt
Des Moines Roosevelt was led by Amaya Davison Amaya Davison 5'5" | PG Des Moines Roosevelt | 2022 State IA in scoring last year, as the Class of 2022 prospect averaged 13.5 points per night.
Davison finished with 297 points total, shooting over 41 percent from the floor and almost 30 percent from the three-point line. She also led the Roughriders with 65 assists, averaging three per game to go along with 100 rebounds and 56 steals.
Kayla Benson – Sioux City East
Sioux City East stunned West Des Moines Dowling in the regional championship last year, advancing to the Class 5A state tournament.
One of the key pieces to the unit was Class of 2022’s Kayla Benson as she produced 134 points with 58 rebounds, 24 steals and 19 assists in 24 games.
Benson shot just over 35 percent from the field and was second on the team with 36 made three-pointers.
Emma Gipple Emma Gipple 5'8" | SG Dowling Catholic | 2022 State IA – West Des Moines Dowling
West Des Moines Dowling graduates several seniors, but the Maroons have some returning players with experience.
That includes Emma Gipple Emma Gipple 5'8" | SG Dowling Catholic | 2022 State IA , as the Class of 2022 prospect had no trouble finding her rhythm in the starting lineup. Gipple shot 49 percent from the floor, scoring 124 points with 116 rebounds, 46 assists, 16 steals and 11 made three-pointers.
Trinity Cheatom Trinity Cheatom 5'5" | PG Des Moines Roosevelt | 2022 State IA – Des Moines Roosevelt
Another Class of 2022 player who started all 22 games for Des Moines Roosevelt last year was Trinity Cheatom Trinity Cheatom 5'5" | PG Des Moines Roosevelt | 2022 State IA .
Cheatom scored 223 points as one of three Roughriders to go over the 200-point mark. She also had 96 rebounds, 65 assists and 35 steals, shooting almost 40 percent from the field with 25 made three-pointers.
Taylor Drent – Sioux City East
Sioux City East’s surprising run to the state tournament was assisted by Class of 2023’s Taylor Drent.
Drent started 13 games and played in all 24, scoring 99 points with 106 rebounds, 22 steals, 18 assists and six blocked shots. She also knocked down eight three-pointers and was effective getting to – and sinking – free throws, going 33-for-47.
