The incoming senior class still has plenty of time to choose a school, but several point guards— some of which have a few offers— have yet to commit to play. This year, AAU didn’t get into gear until July, so there is still time to see some of these girls before the high school season, assuming it starts on schedule this November. For example, Iowa had the go-ahead to resume grassroots play, but some big Minnesota tournaments still have potential to be rescheduled for a later date this summer.
I put together a list of nine prospects who are in the top 100 for the 2021 class, are still playing for an AAU team and have not yet made an official commitment announcement on Twitter. All of these players would be good finds for smaller colleges looking to pick up an all-around point guard, and several of these players are nice scorers who could play on the wing.
[player_tooltip player_id="164938" first="Matayia" last="Tellis"] — 2021 — Iowa City West High School — Team Iowa
Tellis is a quick player who takes leadership on the floor. She can score by slashing or hitting a three from range, and she led West in rebounding last season. She also makes quick reads for steals on defense. She’s played with some elite players in high school, so she hasn’t had the spotlight much, but she’s one of those players who you want on your team and don’t like to play against.
[player_tooltip player_id="64760" first="Maggie" last="Wilkins"] — 2021 — Knoxville High School — Kingdom Hoops
Wilkins has confidence on the floor to take a three, make a floater or lock down a matchup. She has quick hands on defense and picks anyone who shows her the ball. She led Knoxville in scoring last year with 23 points per game.
[player_tooltip player_id="164949" first="Macy" last="Gaskill"] — 2021 — Urbandale High School — All Iowa Attack
Gaskill has a lot of potential entering her senior year. Despite sharing a stat line with the Gyamfi sisters, she made an impact on the floor last high school season by making good reads.
[player_tooltip player_id="131178" first="Riley" last="Gilroy"] — 2021 — Bondurant-Farrar High School — All Iowa Attack
Gilroy is a catch-and-shoot scorer who throws in the occasional pull-up jumper. Bondurant Farrar returns most of their top scorers, and Gilroy could have a breakout senior season.
[player_tooltip player_id="131151" first="Tatum" last="Grubbs"] — 2021 — Exira-EHK High School — CY Select
Grubbs contributes in several categories, including rebounds, assists and scoring. CY Select has some hidden gems on its teams, and it has players like [player_tooltip player_id="63019" first="Audi" last="Crooks"] with D1 offers. They’re worth the watch at the next tournament.
[player_tooltip player_id="131268" first="Mary" last="Kate King"] — 2021 — Wahlert Catholic High School — Team Iowa
King has a good skill set and finishes well at the basket for her height. She collected rebounds, steals and assists for Wahlert last season. Just watching the way she moves, I think she has a lot of potential.
[player_tooltip player_id="131188" first="Zoey" last="Baylor"] — 2021 — CAM High School — All Iowa Attack
Baylor was the second leading scorer for CAM last season, and the leading scorer just graduated. She was also second in rebounds and assists.
[player_tooltip player_id="164961" first="Laura" last="Sweeney"] — 2021 — Carroll High School — Play4Him
Sweeney shows potential as a shooter, and she led Carroll in assists last year.
[player_tooltip player_id="164964" first="Hayley" last="Chappell"] — 2021 — Valley High School — Beyond Ball
Chappell scraps and goes into contact for steals, and she crashes the boards to get almost four per game. She led Valley in assists last season and has had several good performances already this AAU season.
