Breakdown:
[player_tooltip player_id="158515" first="Charlotte" last="Richman"] Catches Fire
We have all known Richman to be the prolific three-level shooter, but her time came to show off her range against a prolific San Diego Waves team. She let it go with little to no notice, as she was an astonishing six for six from the field for a game high 20 point total. Charlotte has received several Division 1 offers and notice - and for good reason, as this was a very telling game of her skills as an adept guard with a lot of variability and discipline.
[player_tooltip player_id="158564" first="Zoe" last="Borter"]: Tough
Borter is a guard with a solid frame who knows how to get a basket when her team needs it. She cuts hard, can hit the open three-pointer and has a number of ways to hurt you. She finishes strong at the basket and had a nice spin move on [player_tooltip player_id="103360" first="Taryn" last="Johnson"] that led to a nice left-handed layup. The Beaverton guard finished with a solid 13 point, 6 rebound effort where she was a difference maker as a scorer and rebounder who plays with a certain edge that is difficult to match.
Supporting Cast
[player_tooltip player_id="158544" first="Emma" last="Sixta"] had an incredible game as an interior defender as she caught her opposition by surprise with her length and timing skills as a shot blocker and had several nice finds as a facilitator. [player_tooltip player_id="158547" first="Madison" last="Naro"] had a great showing as a pass first guard with rebounding capabilities. [player_tooltip player_id="158567" first="Lainey" last="Spear"] had a well-rounded game as an interior scorer, a solid rebounder, and a forward who has the length and skills as a passer. This combination kept Clutch Rose in the game in the second half as they battled as a unit against the Southern California powerhouse.
[player_tooltip player_id="54100" first="Breya" last="Cunningham"]
Cunningham didn’t need a lot of touches to make a difference, as they fed her considerably but she also made a living in the low post on the offensive boards. She had a solid showing all across the board as a two way player with the ability to affect the game in a multitude of ways. Her 14 point, 9 rebound, 2 assist, 2 block, 2 steal effort showed her ability to dominate the game with a simple approach to the game through her persistence and mobility as a 6’4” center.
[player_tooltip player_id="103360" first="Taryn" last="Johnson"]: Versatility
Johnson is a superior athlete with a lot of length and size and considerable wingspan as she has so many ways to score and contribute for the Waves. She had a nice baseline drive and finished with her long arms, but she is also a solid defender who plays with resilience and discipline. Her 9 point, 5 rebound, 3 assist effort showed her ability to contribute to her team as a do it all forward that makes plays with or without the ball - and does it at a high level.
Anousinh and Sugapong
[player_tooltip player_id="103554" first="Jazzy" last="Anousinh"] and Sumayah Sugapong are the eclectic two-punch combo that not only play for the San Diego Waves but also Terri Bamford’s La Jolla Country Day. This can be seen through their chemistry on the floor, as they constantly are looking for each other and know where the other will be constantly on the floor. The fact that they play year round next alongside each other translates ten folds as the combo guards are attached to the hip. They combined for 17 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals as high motor guards with the ability to get loose on a whim - but also with abilities as sharpshooters.
