One of those events is being hosted throughout this month by The Grind Session in Phoenix, AZ. A few players from Southern California have been participating in the event, and here’s a quick look at some of them.
1. Valerie “Sunshine” Huerta – St. Paul 2021
A Central Washington commit, Huerta is a solid point guard with a good feel for the game. She has good vision and can find the open teammate. She’s a crafty ball-handler who can break down the defense and get into the paint. Can find teammates cutting along the baseline. She’s a strong scoring guard too. Her size doesn’t matter as she can consistently finish over the defense. Lefty shooter who can get hot quickly.
2. Rosie Avalos – La Serna 2021
Avalos is a good defensive player, especially on the wing. She has quick hands and creates turnovers that can lead to transition buckets. Reads the passing lanes well and applies pressure on ball-handlers. She has good size for a forward and is a solid rebounder. Offensively, she can shoot from distance and has a little slashing game too. Comfortable with the ball on the wing or in the paint. Unselfish player who looks for teammates.
3. Jolie Johnson Jolie Johnson 6'0" | SF San Clemente HS | 2022 State CA – San Clemente 2022
Johnson is a wing who can also play around the rim. She’s a pretty solid shooter with range out to the three-point line. She’s a good rebounder who doesn’t mind playing in the paint. Moves well without the ball and makes good cuts to the rim, she can finish pretty well at the rim. Defensively, she is pretty solid off-ball. Good ball denial and she can read passes well. Gets back defensively in transition.
4. Serenity Johnson Serenity Johnson 5'8" | SG Corona Centennial | 2024 State CA – Windward 2024
Johnson is a player I’ve seen multiple times already and she’s poised to make an immediate impact as a freshman whenever the high school season begins. She has the makings to be an elite scoring guard. She’s comfortable creating her own shot and is a very solid three-point shooter. She can push the ball in transition and keeps her head up on the break. Makes the right play/pass. She’s a solid defensive player on the wings.
