With most Milwaukee teams unable to play during the WIAA high school season- athletes & coaches took it upon themselves to start a league so boys and girls were still able to showcase talent and play basketball. From March 11th- May 7th, teams competed once or twice a week in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Below is a list of impact players who have risen their stock and our prospects to keep an eye on.
[player_tooltip player_id="171811" first="Tori" last="Kostuck"] | Pius XI
Kostuck is having a heck of a summer! She’s everywhere. Competed all over the place, we’ve seen Kostuck in leagues, tournaments, and circuit-level play. She’s becoming an all-around player that will make an impact every time she steps onto the court. I enjoy her feel for the game and how she moves effortlessly without the basketball. She doesn’t force much- but she’s a kid that will easily go off for a double-digit scoring game if you take her lightly. She’s become lethal in the midrange and continues to have that perimeter shot that is very impressive!
[player_tooltip player_id="132394" first="Sidney" last="Scruggs"] | Milwaukee Riverside
We are counting down the days until we can watch Scruggs compete again at the high school level. Her stock is extremely high and she’s a player that is going to excel at the next level. A natural scorer with a bag full of finish moves, Scruggs is nearly impossible to defend when attacking the rim. She’s never been one to shy away from contact- and knows how to use her defender to create for herself. She’s explosive and shifty- very fun to watch and very productive on both ends of the floor.
Jasmine Howard | Rufus King
Jasmine Howard improves her game every time I’ve watched her compete. She’s gifted athletically which helps her be able to maintain a high tempo the entire game. She’s a bouncy guard who facilitates well on offense. She’s able to withstand ball pressure as she has well-developed handles. She can create off the dribble if needed and has a smooth perimeter shot.
[player_tooltip player_id="204146" first="Jayla" last="Butler"] | Milwaukee School of Languages
Butler is a bucket! Her ability to make it happen on offense was super impressive. Her feel for the game and playmaking ability stood out tremendously. She is an incredibly shifty guard with a deep bag of dribble moves. She’s quick off the bounce and explodes past the first defender and into the lane. She displayed the ability to split the defender as well. Butler has great energy and a player who certainly should have eyes on her going into her high school season.
[player_tooltip player_id="156086" first="Lauryn" last="Hunt"] | Rufus King
Hunt showed tremendous upside for being an impact post player in the Milwaukee conference. She’s dominant and strong in the paint- using her body well on the block. If she can become more consistent and finish strong at the rim, I have a hard time thinking of anyone who could stop her inside. She’s a rebounding machine! She keeps the ball high and has great decision-making on kicking it out or putting it back up. She’s athletic and able to get up and down the court in transition play. Look forward to watching her in the paint for Rufus King.
[player_tooltip player_id="132381" first="Nakiyah" last="Hurst"] | Milwaukee Academy Of Science
Hurst lived up to the hype during the City On The Floor league. A monster offensively, Hurst gets whatever she wants. She’s a three-level scorer with the IQ and strength to create anywhere on the floor. She’s an overpowering player that needs multiple defenders and points of contact in order to slow her down. She is a contact finisher that will finish strong and draw the foul at the same time. She shows signs of being able to consistently shoot off the dribble as well. She was the primary ball-handler for her team and often finished coast to coast- pushing the tempo on every play.
