Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Mathurin shook off an tough shooting night to make some of the biggest plays down the stretch for the hard earned win. She got the ball rolling in the fourth quarter with a tough off the dribble triple. Then started looking for spots on defense. Which included a powerful block at the rim that energized her team. A few possessions later, it was the Michigan commit forcing a steal, then staying with it to get an “And 1” putback that brought them within one. Gritty plays like that will be crucial as Mathurin chases a Gold Ball with her BA teammates.

Even with the waves of pressure thrown at her, Mathurin often looked under control and smooth. Led Broken Arrow with 19 points, including 3-6 shooting from three. Once again, her full scoring bag was on display. As she added in tough finishing at the rim to go along with the perimeter shooting. One aspect that seems to set her apart from players is how quickly she reads and reacts to defense. If the defense sags off for a split second, then she’s stopping and pulling. If they lean too much on a close out, it’s a blow by to the rim.

Complete scoring display from the highly touted recruit. Scored early with pretty three pointers, then did the hard work late to help close out the win. Tough drives in crowds, to either finish or earn trips on the line. Type of off the ball scorer who knows how to use a defender’s momentum against them. Scoring is second nature to her. Yet maybe the most excited she looked all night was when he she got on the floor for a loose ball then quickly flipped it to an open Marracini for a big second quarter triple. Speaks volumes on how she’s not only a scorer, but a full competitor.

Game Watched: Team Trae Young 3SSB 2025 vs SMAC
In the Run 4 the Roses 17U title game that aired live on ESPNU, Mathurin continued to prove her bonafides as one of the best scorers in the nation. The skilled guard seemed to make all the offensive plays late to close out the win. She carved up the defense in just about every way possible. There was of course big three pointers, athletic drives to the rim and the type of skill moves that can only be perfected by hours in the gym. The amount that defenders bite on her pump fakes speaks not only to her scoring ability, but that extra attention to detail by Mathurin to create those big buckets.
The Class of 2025 in Oklahoma is a remarkable group. The performances by the Broken Arrow Tiger this summer have only added to the growing prestige of Oklahoma’s exceptional prospects.

There aren’t many better that I’ve seen on the road this year than

3SSB. Mathurin is a 5’10 guard, that has a complete basketball game and when I say complete, I mean COMPLETE. She can handle, create, facilitate, and produce better than most I’ve seen in my scouting career. While also being a tenacious defender and aggressive rebounder on the boards. Not to mention, she has a lot of intangibles that you can’t teach as a coach. Things such as a high motor, situational understanding of the game, and how to be a natural leader. When I had the chance to watch her compete this Spring, she was still committed to Nebraska but following that weekend, she reopened her recruitment and within the first few days she had a ton of high-end Power-5 D1 offers. At this point she hasn’t pulled the trigger as to where she is going to go yet but whoever gets her, is getting a winner, who is sure to produce against anybody.

but seeing it up close was impressive to say the least. Mathurin checks out A LOT of boxes that will translate to the college level once her high school career comes to an end. She is smooth in her movements, athletic in every way imaginable, she understands and knows situational basketball, she is great at spacing the floor, and she can shoot the lights out of the gym. These are all things that are going to get her to see the floor once she gets to Nebraska’s campus after her last year of high school ball. This weekend her team dominated in basically every game they played and she was one of the top players on her squad, if not thee top player on her squad. Which says everything you need to know because her squad is full of D1 prospects, who will be competing at that level in one way or another at the end of the day.

I’ve seen a lot of video and heard a lot of great things about McKenzie Mathurin up until this point but i’m excited to be able to cover it and see it first-hand for myself over the next few days. Mathurin is a Nebraska Cornhuskers commit and a real hooper. She is someone that lives in the gym and she is dedicated to this sport more than most. Not to undermine anyone else but I would be shocked if she isn’t one of the best prospects on the floor at Hyvee Arena this weekend. From what I know she has a quick handle, she can score in bunches, and she works relentlessly on the defensive side of the basketball. She understands situational basketball to a T and that is something that you can’t teach at a certain point as a coach. This is another player that if she plays to her full ability, she is going to be lighting it up at a high rate from all over the floor at this event and that will be fun to watch.

Another member of Oklahoma’s elite in 2025, Mathurin was quieter compared to Lofton but still left her mark with efficient scoring. She continues to show a higher level basketball feel with the way she scores off the ball and great overall shot selection. Spot up threes, looking smooth while pulling up off ball screens, runners on drives; the 918 standout can hurt opponents in a multitude of ways.
