Arizona 4A – Top Returning Scorers from 2020-2021 Season: Part 1

With the Arizona High School basketball scene on the horizon, it is important to take a quick look back at all of the top-performing players from the last season. This specific article is going to break down some of the leading returning scorers in the 4A division and how their game last year may transfer over to this year. This group is jam-packed with a lot of talent and potential for the future outside of just their high school career. I am looking forward to following along with some of these players and teams over the course of the season to see how it all lays out. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="259202" first="Alyssa" last="Heath"] - Senior - Mohave HS - 20.6 PPG </strong> The top returning scorer in the state of Arizona 4A division with a total of 329 points over the season and an impressive <strong>20.6 points per game, </strong>[player_tooltip player_id="259202" first="Alyssa" last="Heath"] is back for her senior year to play guard for the Mohave Lady Thunderbirds. The competitive captain led her team to an overall record last season of 10-6 with her ability to shoot the ball and hustle on both ends of the floor. After receiving the First-Team All-Region Award as just a sophomore, Heath has continued to show exactly what it takes to be one of the top scorers in the league. With 43% of the shots she takes falling, Alyssa makes herself deadly when the ball is in her hands. Don’t be surprised when she has a big-time senior season!!! <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="259200" first="Jayla" last="Scott"] - Senior - Vista Grande HS - 20.4 PPG </strong> Crafty, six-foot-one, senior, [player_tooltip player_id="259200" first="Jayla" last="Scott"] makes the second-place spot for top returning scorers (Arizona 4A) with a steady <strong>20.4 PPG.</strong> After scoring a total of 306 points throughout the 2020-2021 season, Scott is a player to look out for when she catches the ball down low. Has the ability to post up the defender and uses good footwork to get herself open or draw the foul. Jayla was awarded the MaxPreps AZ Player of the Game award five separate times during the year while also having 10+ games that she finished with a double-double. She has the scoring/rebounding combo locked down making her a massive threat for the Vista Grande Lady Spartans. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="138099" first="Jocelyn" last="Chavez"] - Sophomore - Dysart HS - 19.1 PPG </strong> Chavez was an outstanding player for the Dysart Demons last season as only a freshman, making it into the top of the list of returning scorers with an average of <strong>19.1 points per game </strong>and a total of 229 points for the year. She is a five-foot-nine combo guard that really has a raw talent for the game. Jocelyn finished off her first season playing high school basketball by scoring 38 points in the final game of the year against the Buckeye Lady Hawks. If she continues to bring the same energy over the rest of her time at this level, there is no doubt in my mind that she will be a top prospect in the area. Huge rookie performance for the youngster. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="214696" first="Kamariah" last="Hawkins"] - Senior - PHH Prep HS - 17.5 PPG </strong> With a very recent transfer to PHH Prep, [player_tooltip player_id="214696" first="Kamariah" last="Hawkins"] is leaving Yuma and taking her talent, along with last season’s <strong>17.5 points per game</strong> with her to Phoenix.  After an impressive junior year as captain for the Lady Criminals, Hawkins finished off with an impressive 315 points making sure that everyone knew about her scoring ability. She is the type of player that will really excel down low on the block while getting her team points and an abundance of rebounds. Kamariah will most likely be featured in the upcoming list of top returning block leaders from last season, averaging 19.8 rebounds per game. It should be interesting to see how her talent and skill will transfer over to a new team. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="259201" first="Samantha" last="Lyle"] - Senior - Saguaro HS - 17.4 PPG </strong> Samantha is a six-foot-tall, center/forward that is returning for her final season of high school basketball to play for the Saguaro Lady Sabercats. She concludes part one of our list by averaging <strong>17.4 points per game</strong> and a total of 174 points over the course of her junior year. This long and lanky athlete brings a lot to the table on both ends of the floor for her team. Earning the MaxPreps Arizona Player of the Game award three different times in 2021, Lyle showed to be a top-notch competitor to others in the league. She knows how to get the ball in the hole no matter the cost.
