Which South Florida prospect will lead the area in helpers?
In 2020, names like <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="91509" first="Jaiyah" last="Harris-Smith"]</strong> (Norland), <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="91491" first="Ja’Leah" last="Williams"]</strong> (Blanche Ely), <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="91566" first="Joey" last="Delancy"]</strong> (<em>American Heritage</em>), and <strong>Danielle Aronsky</strong> (<em>American Heritage</em>) finished near the top in the state. As I wrote in my previous <a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/2021/09/prediction-forecast-scoring-leaders-south-florida/"><em>article</em></a>, Delancy will be a top pick in multiple categories. Also, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="219938" first="Taylor" last="Blackshear"]</strong> with Benjamin will be right in the conversation.
Who is the pick in 2021?
Let’s have a look…
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="91642" first="Kristina" last="Godfrey"]</strong> – <em>Miami Country Day</em>
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="91642" first="Kristina" last="Godfrey"] is going to dish out dimes for one of the top teams in the region. The 5-foot-8 lefty guard averaged 6.6 assists per game as a sophomore. Her mark was good for 11th in the state of Florida. Moreover, that number is more than double her average from her freshman campaign. The Spartans have a very good team around her which should lead to multiple opportunities. Godfrey is crafty and an excellent ball handler to boot.
<strong>Abigail Martinez</strong> – <em>Mater Lakes Academy</em>
2022 Abigail Martinez is a solid all-around playmaker for the Bears. The 5-foot-10 guard/forward averaged 6.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game. For this post, her assist mark was good for 13th in the state. Martinez can dish and limits her turnovers. Statistically speaking, she made very few errors in that category. Martinez’s size and length makes her a tough guard. She’s a great player to have and makes her teammates better on the floor.
<strong>Genesis Santiago</strong> - <em>Mater Academy Charter</em>
2022 Genesis Santiago saw a huge increase in this category from her sophomore to junior year. The 5-foot-5 guard went from an assist per game to nearly six. Santiago also averaged 8.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. She should be a key playmaker and senior leader. Santiago might see a nice increase in all of the categories I mentioned above.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="219924" first="Khadee" last="Hession"]</strong> - <em>American Heritage Delray</em>
One of the best backcourt players I saw last season was [player_tooltip player_id="219924" first="Khadee" last="Hession"]. The 5-foot-9 combo guard has a tremendous handle and great vision in the open floor. Hession averaged 5.5 dimes per game as a freshman. She previously played at <strong>Miami Country Day</strong> so she’s used to top competition. Despite some turnover at American Heritage, I expect Hession to hover around that mark in 2021. She’s just too good and only getting better.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="243961" first="Janay" last="Quinn"]</strong> - Miami
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="243961" first="Janay" last="Quinn"] is a high energy player for the Stingarees. The 5-foot-2 point guard averaged over 5 assists per game last season. Quinn plays above her height and is extremely competitive. Tough is how I would describe Quinn. She makes big plays and gives it her all.
<strong>Tamara Elliot</strong> - <em>Western</em>
2024 Tamara Elliot led the Wildcats as a freshman with 4.5 assists per game. The 5-foot-6 guard also averaged over 11 points per game. She plays on a good Western team that should improve on its 10-7 mark from a season ago. Elliot could be the ring leader on that mission.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="243927" first="Angelina" last="Kohlwaies"]</strong> - <em>Cardinal Newman</em>
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="243927" first="Angelina" last="Kohlwaies"] is a big guard for Cardinal Newman. The 5-foot-9 Kohlwaies is versatile with multiple skill sets on the floor. She averaged over four assists per game for the Lady Crusaders. Kohlwaies plays on a talented team along with 2023 <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="145087" first="Checorey" last="Bouie"]</strong>. Bouie can really stretch the floor and knock down shots. You would be inclined (and right) to think the pair play well together. Put two and two together and you have plenty of opportunity for Kohlwaies to rack up assists.
