With the start of the season right around the corner, We at Prep Girls Hoops will be releasing comprehensive region-by-region previews highlighting key players and teams as well as predicting which teams will finish where in the standings.
Last week, we unveiled our single-A previews. Now, we are moving on to the double-A slate. How will things play out? Here is our 2021-22 outlook.
Emma Johnson Emma Johnson 5'10" | PF Crescent | 2022 State SC – 2022 – Crescent HS – In Prep Girls Hoops’ updated 2022 rankings, Johnson was listed at No. 93 and No. 13 among power forwards. Johnson is a very effective four that poses problems for opponents on defense with her ability to steal the ball as well as haul in rebounds. She has also proven herself to be an effective scorer for the Tigers and was a key piece in Crescent qualifying for a playoff berth last season. The basketball realm will miss Johnson after this season as she has committed to Limestone to continue her academic and athletic career in her other sport – softball.
Talissa Cannady – 2022 – Abbeville HS – Notice the theme here with two-sport athletes? Cannady is another who also excels at softball in addition to her basketball exploits. Make that a third sport when one adds volleyball. Basketball-wise, Cannady has a knack for ball handling and being able to limit turnovers with her ability to take care of the ball. She is a consistent scorer that can give her team her fair share of rebounds. Cannady also gets the job done on defense with how she collects steals. She is an all-around athlete who should be more of a focal point for the Panthers offense with the graduation of DeMia Johnson.
Mary Wilson Reyner Mary Wilson Reyner 5'9" | SG Christ Church | 2022 State SC – 2022 – Christ Church Episcopal – If one were to make a list of schools that were more talented than coach Janet Vicks’ Cavaliers, that list would not be too long. Reyner gives a 3-point shooting dimension to Christ Church Episcopal’s offensive attack and she can and will drain those treys from anywhere behind the arc. Complimenting her 3-point shooting ability is how she makes plays on defense, which includes coming up with steals. Reyner can also excel in the transition game. The Cavaliers are a team that merely two seasons ago were participants in the Class AA state title game.
McCall King McCall King 5'11" | SG Christ Church | 2022 State SC – 2022 – Christ Church Episcopal – Speaking of talented Cavaliers … the veterans on the roster such as King ought to make Christ Church Episcopal even more dangerous in 2021-22. This King is an on-court queen who has already committed to UNC Wilmington. Also accurate from long range, she too can knock down 3-point attempts from anywhere behind the arc. King also makes a number of plays on defense with how she collects steals and her knack for getting out in transition. With how accurate she is from downtown, it can sometimes throw defenses off balance when she opts to drive to the basket and convert on layups.
Madeline Duwe Madeline Duwe 5'9" | SG Christ Church | 2022 State SC – 2022 – Christ Church Episcopal – Aficionados of the Cavaliers will miss Duwe (as well as King and Reyner) when they graduate after this season. Duwe is another that has established herself as one of the top scorers for coach Vicks’ team. Similarly to her senior teammates, King and Reyner, she too gets it done from behind the 3-point line. Duwe can also get her fair share of steals and can haul in a number of rebounds. She knows how to get open via plays off screens and finding ways around defenses. On the travel circuit, she has hooped for FBC Carolina Elite. Duwe is coming off a 2020-21 where she averaged more than 16 points per game.
Prep Girls Hoops predictions:

Crescent HS – Michelle Parnell will be in her second season in her second stint as coach.
Abbeville HS – The Panthers are looking to build on last season’s winning ways.
Ninety Six HS – The Wildcats graduated only one senior from last year’s team.

Greenville Tech Charter – The Warriors went winless last season.
