The Class of 2022 is loaded with talent from the top to the bottom. In this article we look at the prospects who are under the radar poised for a big year.
[player_tooltip player_id="353758" first="Rylie" last="Ottmann"]- 5’6 Point Guard "La Cueva" Class of 2022

[player_tooltip player_id="353758" first="Rylie" last="Ottmann"] from the La Cueva Bears is one of the most underrated prospects in New Mexico with her all around play. She is a two-way player that plays both sides of the ball at an elite level. She is a true floor general that looks to make plays for her teammates while being aggressive looking for her own shot. She is a very fierce competitor who gives her all at all times on the floor. She is a very consistent three point shooter and a great ball handler. She averaged over 9 points per game last season and you can expect that number to increase this season. She also averaged 3.7 steals per game and is one of the premier defensive players in New Mexico with her instincts and anticipation.

[player_tooltip player_id="353899" first="Teona" last="Savic"]- 5’7 Small Forward "La Cueva" Class of 2022

La Cueva Bears Small Forward [player_tooltip player_id="353899" first="Teona" last="Savic"] was the second leading scorer for the Bears last season at around 10 points per game. She also contributed with 4.5 rebounds per game and was one of the teams more all around and consistent players they relied on all season. Her best game last season was when she scored 19 points on the road vs Piedra Vista last Spring and she showcased her full offensive game. She is strong in the paint and has a great inside presence of drawing fouls. She is one of the states better mid range scorers and is capable of stepping outside the three point line and hitting long range shots to space the floor for La Cueva. She is also a very underrated defensive player where she averaged around 2.8 steals per game playing the passing lanes. After a successful season last year, expect Teona and the Bears to take the next step this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="353770" first="Kennedy" last="Brown"]- 5’4 Guard "Volcano Vista" Class of 2022

[player_tooltip player_id="353770" first="Kennedy" last="Brown"] from the Volcano Hawks was one of the biggest reason her school won the 5A State Championship last spring. She is also a multi sport athlete where she committed to the University of New Mexico in soccer. She brings a ton of energy to the team and does all of the little things to help teams win games that doesn’t always show up in box scorers at the end of games. She often guards some of the best opposing offensive players on other teams and is a tough defender that makes it super difficult for offensive players to score. Offensively she is a guard that can direct the offense and makes her teammates better by setting them up for shots to help this team. She is a consistent shooter and play-maker that will give Volcano Vista a strong chance at repeating as champions this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="353695" first="Lanae" last="Billy"]- 5’8 Small Forward "Piedra Vista" Class of 2022

[player_tooltip player_id="353695" first="Lanae" last="Billy"] had a solid season for Piedra Vista last spring and don’t be surprised to see her take her play to another level this season. Last spring she averaged 15.2 points per game which led her team last season and contributed with 5.5 rebounds per game which was second on the team last year. Despite only playing six games last season, expect [player_tooltip player_id="353695" first="Lanae" last="Billy"] yo come out strong for this year. [player_tooltip player_id="353695" first="Lanae" last="Billy"] is also a good three point shooter from range and can score from all over the floor shooting 38% from three. She also gets to the free throw line often drawing fouls and shoots a solid 83% from the free throw line. Expect [player_tooltip player_id="353695" first="Lanae" last="Billy"] to have a nice season for Piedra Vista this year.
[player_tooltip player_id="353689" first="Mattie" last="Cooksey"]- 5’9 Center "Loving" Class of 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="353689" first="Mattie" last="Cooksey"] is a walking double double player every game and is arguably the best and most consistent big in New Mexico. In 5 of the 11 games she played last season she had 5 double doubles. During the course of last season she averaged 13.5 points per game which led the team and 11.5 rebounds per game which was 5th in New Mexico. during the regular season she score in double figures in 7 of the 11 games. What makes [player_tooltip player_id="353689" first="Mattie" last="Cooksey"] a good player is that she takes smart shots and lets the game come to her by not forcing bad shots. She is a team first player that plays the game to win before anything else and expect her to give Loving a chance to win many games this season.
