A month into the 2021-22 high school basketball season, it’s still relatively early in the campaign. For this year’s seniors who want to play college basketball, however, the homestretch is looming and decisions need to be made. 2022s who are holding out for Division 1 opportunities are in dreamland now. It’s increasingly unlikely to happen. Scholarship opportunities for seniors at other levels are becoming scarce, as well. There are still tons of non-scholarship opportunities out there, though, and lots of athletes who can get the job done for D3, NAIA and JUCO programs. In the weeks ahead we’ll be covering a number of unsigned seniors to ensure that college coaches are apprised of the available athletes. In the past week we have written some about Megan Selgado of New Life Academy, [player_tooltip player_id="109182" first="Camille" last="Cummings"] of Centennial, [player_tooltip player_id="298803" first="Destiny" last="Piekarski"] of Littlefork, [player_tooltip player_id="147450" first="Grace" last="Massaquoi"] of Holy Angels, and others. Here are five more seniors who have looked good of late. #78 [player_tooltip player_id="57959" first="Hope" last="Dudycha"] – guard, Austin Recruiters who need a true point guard need to look closely at Hope, who is in the top three still available after #16 [player_tooltip player_id="57914" first="Ronnie" last="Porter"] of Como Park and #40 [player_tooltip player_id="109134" first="Charita" last="Lewis"] of Minnehaha Academy. The 5’6 floor general has done a terrific job of running a high-quality show for the Packers for several seasons now, and she’s proven herself in AAU with Southern Minnesota Fury. Her shooting numbers this season are eye-popping. According to Austin coach Eric Zoske, at the beginning of the week she was 17-for-31 (55%) from two-point range and 19-of-30 (63%) from three! That’s impressive. Hope is a great passer with nice court vision and high intelligence. #90 [player_tooltip player_id="223913" first="Taryn" last="Frazer"] – guard, Cass Lake-Bena The next-best point guard available is Taryn. The 5’6 senior is one of the most dynamic players in the state, with quick feet, tons of range and a heart of steel. Frazer has led CLB to a perfect 6-0 start to their season and they are currently ranked in the top 3 in Class A by Minnesota Basketball News. Taryn is averaging over 27 points per game and recently passed the 2,000 mark for her career. Frazer proved this summer with Minnesota Stars Bjorgaard that she can play against bigger players of all pedigrees and she’ll do that at the next level too. She is also a 4.0 student who has overcome significant challenges to become a true leader in the Native American community. #105 [player_tooltip player_id="57942" first="Hope" last="Kanenwisher"] – guard, Elk River Hope was Taryn’s teammate with Stars Bjorgaard. What Frazer delivered game in and game out on offense, Kanenwisher brought that much and more on the defensive side. That’s not to say she can’t score. She can. Hope has been in double digits in four of her last five games and had a season-high 15 against a strong Grand Rapids squad. Kanenwisher, who is about 5’6, distributes the ball well and is always a team-first type of kid. Hope plays with a big motor and will do whatever it takes to get a W against some of the state’s top 4A competition. #162 [player_tooltip player_id="298811" first="Brooke" last="Gunderson"] – guard, Buffalo I love it when players put out a highlight video that is loaded with strong defensive plays. It’s rare but particularly impactful. Brooke (top photo) posted some video a few days ago (watch it here) and it’s loaded with great defense. The 5’8 guard’s ability to put the ball-handler under pressure and force steals is impressive. It’s not like she’s the quickest or most-athletic player on the floor. Rather it’s a great sense of anticipation and timing. Once the ball is in Brooke’s hands she knows what to do with it. Brooke gets to the rim frequently and has nice touch around the basket which is why she’s averaging nearly 15 points per game. If Brooke continues to improve, her ranking is sure to rise accordingly. #170 [player_tooltip player_id="147462" first="Kara" last="Hoag"] – guard, Maple Grove There are probably 350 high school teams in Minnesota where Kara could start at point guard. Playing for a highly successful, talent-laden program like Maple Grove, however, it can be hard to crack the lineup. Kara has been very patient, waiting a long time for her first real shot at significant varsity minutes. The time has come and the 5’6 point guard is now making the most of her opportunity. She deserves the chance to do the same thing at the next level. We have watched Hoag for years as quarterback of a solid Metro Stars team where she has faced tons of quality opponents. She has quick feet, quick hands, a big motor, and a real passion for the game. Her best basketball is yet to come. One more to look into... We need to check up on [player_tooltip player_id="147456" first="McKenna" last="Ziemke"] of Belle Plaine. It has been awhile since we watched closely but the Belle Plaine senior is leading her team to a lot of success so far. McKenna is the Tigers’ top scorer at about 14 points per game and had a season-high 17 against both Tri-City United and Glencoe-Silver Lake. She is very athletic and we have always thought her potential was excellent. We’ll try and get another look in the near future. Top photo: Senior [player_tooltip player_id="298811" first="Brooke" last="Gunderson"] of Buffalo
