The first week of 2022 in prep girls hoops is in the books. Below is a look at players that were nominated for Player of the Week via Twitter or Instagram. The poll is open through the end of day on Wednesday (1/12), and you can vote once per hour using the poll at the bottom of this article. Here are the nominees:
Nia Brown Nia Brown 5'11" | PF Orange Park | 2022 State FL – Orange Park – 2022
Nia is a Chipola College commit who eclipsed the 1,000 point scoring mark in a 12 point performance over Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Congrats to Nia! She also had 22 and 9 in a tough loss to St. Augustine on Thursday. OP is now 12-5 with none of their losses being by more than 8 points.
Olivia Delancy Olivia Delancy 6'0" | SF Bogie HS | 2022 State FL – Boca Ciega – 2022
Liv led the Pirates to two big wins against Pinellas County foes this week. She put 32 points and 8 boards on Calvary Christian (Clearwater) on Tuesday, and dropped 27 and 6 against Lakewood in a tight, two-point win on Thursday. She did this by shooting efficiently at a clip of over 60 percent from the field, too. Bogie is now 10-4 with their only losses coming from some of the top teams in the entire state.
D’Yanis Jimenez D’Yanis Jimenez 5'9" | PG Charlotte | 2023 State FL – Charlotte – 2023
Charlotte traveled up to the She Got Game Classic in Atlanta, and that’s where D’Yanis notched that 1,000th point of her career. That’s a very impressive feat for a junior. Congrats to D’Yanis! They beat a team out of Virginia in game one, and lost to one of the best teams in North Carolina by 10 in game number two. The Fightin’ Tarpons are now 8-6 with their losses coming from 3 out of state teams and 3 very good Florida teams.
Ta’Niya Latson Ta’Niya Latson 5'8" | CG American Heritage | 2022 State #47 Nation FL – American Heritage (Plantation) – 2022
Before AH went 1-1 up at the She Got Game Classic, Ta’Niya had a big time performance on a big stage as she dropped 27 & 10 with 5 steals and 3 blocks against Miami Country Day on Tuesday. They narrowly lost to Example Academy out of Illinois, but they bounced back with a win over Sprayberry in a game that Ta’Niya put up 38 points. AH sits at 15-2 as a favorite to win another 5A title.
Sacoya Burgess Sacoya Burgess 5'10" | PF Bishop McLaughlin HS | 2022 State FL – Wesley Chapel – 2022
Wesley Chapel had their second player to score over 1,000 points in the past couple weeks with Emari Lewis Emari Lewis 5'7" | CG Wesley Chapel | 2022 State FL reaching it at TBCI. Sacoya hit the 1k point milestone on Friday against Zephyrhills in a victorious effort. Congrats to Sacoya! The Wildcats have now won 4 in a row, and are above .500 with a 10-9 record. They completed a 3-0 with prior wins over Wiregrass Ranch and River Ridge.
Kailani Merrell Kailani Merrell 6'0" | PG Spruce Creek | 2026 State FL – Calvary Christian (Ormond Beach) – 2026
Kailani is by far the youngest name on this list. She had 19 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists in a big victory over First Baptist Christian Academy. Kailani followed that up with a 20 point, 8 rebound, 4 steal, and 3 assist effort in another easy win over St. Joseph Academy. Her team now sits at 13-2 as a serious contender in 2A.
