Eight teams from the Sunshine State came to Carrollwood Day to compete in the Play 4 Kay shootout in honor of Kay Yow and her fight against breast cancer. Seven of these teams are ranked in the top 25 of the state, and the eighth one is ranked in the top 50. Here were some of the top shooters from Day 1:
[player_tooltip player_id="219990" first="Nini" last="Davenport"] - Seffner Christian - 2023
Nini has always had some of the best form I've seen, but it's been impressive to see her elevate her game to the next level. She has added a step back and sidestep that allow her to get open looks against taller defenders. She's not afraid to use a shot fake to create some space for herself either. I really like her floater/runner game as well.
[player_tooltip player_id="221653" first="Jada" last="Johnson"] - Miami Country Day - 2025
Jada has good size and a strong frame for a guard in the 2025 class. She was stroking last night, so they were making sure to set screens and get her open which is showing a lot of respect for a Freshman. She's a top player in her class that will continue to be on college coaches' radars.
[player_tooltip player_id="217665" first="Sofia" last="Mendez"] - Miami Country Day - 2024
Sofia is a player I've only been able to watch a few times, but she has always impressed when I do see her. She can handle the rock, moves without the ball well, and has some crafty moves to finish with. Sofia sees the floor and can really put up points in a hurry. Her shot release is high too which will translate well to the next level.
[player_tooltip player_id="219996" first="Daniela" last="Gonzalez"] - Central Pointe - 2022
The USF commit is one of the most athletic players I've seen this year. Her outside shooting has really improved as she was deadly from behind the arc on Friday night. I was sitting next to someone who hadn't seen her play before, and they were shocked to see her step outside and knock it down due to her having such good size and build already.
[player_tooltip player_id="248447" first="Sofia" last="Munoz"] - Central Pointe - 2025
It's hard to believe Sofia is only a Freshman with how much I see her face and name everywhere. She has beautiful rotation on the ball when she lets it go, and her IQ is off the charts for her age. I'm confident with saying she's a top 10 shooter in her class and even top 5. It'll be fun to watch her improve as she grows physically and mentally.
[player_tooltip player_id="243947" first="Tyra" last="Kennedy"] - Brooks DeBartolo - 2023
In a game that was very frustrating for Brooks DeBartolo, Tyra was a bright spot for them in the second half. She was the only player to make a shot from behind the arc with two treys. She did a good job of crowding the passing lanes, pushing the ball up the floor, and finding the open girl.
Ceniya King - Carrollwood Day - 2022
Ceniya is another player that has really good rotation on the ball and has some serious range. They look to get her the rock as she is the best shooter on the team, so she's constantly coming off of screens or moving without the ball to get open.
Tyana Walker - DME - 2022
Tyana Walker is a player that some may overlook when getting a scouting report on DME, but she will make them pay early and often if they forget about her. She hit some tough outside shots on Friday and really gave her team a boost when Cardinal Mooney started to close the gap.
[player_tooltip player_id="91658" first="Olivia" last="Davis"] - Cardinal Mooney - 2023
Olivia is such a crafty playmaker and it translates to every aspect of her game, including her long range shots. Her step back is really tough to defend, and she can score it from anywhere on the floor.
[player_tooltip player_id="221699" first="Kennedy" last="McClain"] - Cardinal Mooney - 2024
Kennedy is really good about finding an open spot and getting her feet set for a good look behind the arc. She's got good height and is definitely a top shooter in the '24 class. Her mid-range and pull up game continues to get better, too.
