The Vikings of 1A Latta were given everything they can handle – and then some – in its second-round contest against Lake View which won the 1A state championship two years ago. Latta prevailed over the Wild Gators by a final score of 45-42 and it needed every one of the 23 points Herman placed on the scoreboard. Herman’s stellar game also included nine rebounds, putting her one shy of a double-double. She also collected five steals and dished out four assists. Herman looks to continue Latta’s winning ways as the Vikings will travel to Denmark-Olar on Monday for a berth in the 1A Lower State final.

The key to defeating 1A Latta is to keep its star veteran guard in check. That was the task that awaited Ridgeland this past Monday and the results were not to the Jaguars’ liking. She dropped 25 points en route to a 59-20 victory over Ridgeland. Herman is not only the lone senior on this season’s Vikings team, she is also Latta’s team captain. For the season, Herman has averaged 15.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists per contest. Following this win, Herman and her Vikings look to keep their winning ways going in the second round against Lake View – 1A state champions from two years ago.

Herman is her, man – and her play last season was a reason why Latta was once again one of the teams to beat among 1A assemblings in 2024-25. Herman is a problem for defenses in part because of the speed she possesses when bringing the ball up the court. Herman also does not shy away from contact as she knows it will give her opportunities at the free throw line. Herman is also one of the premier defensive playmakers in the state as evidenced by the number of steals she can collect – and those steals can turn into offense. Her Vikings concluded the 2024-25 season with a 19-7 record and she averaged 18.5 points, 5.7 steals and 5.3 rebounds per contest. Herman also reached the 1,000-point plateau last season.

Herman made the move this off season back to Latta HS. Kaliya a left-handed off guard really likes to operate from behind the three-point line. She played last season at nearby Trinity Collegiate in Darlington which plays in the SCISA ranks. Kaliya will be counted on for a big season for the Lady Vikings this year over in the Pee Dee.
