The Catholic Central League Championship featured two of Massachusetts’ best teams. Bishop Feehan traveled to St. Mary’s (Lynn) for a competitive title match that included some of the region’s top players. Down 15-5 after the 1st quarter, St Mary’s battled back, outscoring Bishop Feehan 37-29 in the final three quarters, but it wasn’t enough to come out victorious. Bishop Feehan won 44-42 and was crowned CCL Champions. Player of the Game: [player_tooltip player_id="263800" first="Camryn" last="Fauria"] - Bishop Feehan - 6’0’’ - PF/SF Fauria set the tone from the minute the game started and was too big and strong for St. Mary’s in the opening quarter. She had 7 points in the period and 14 at halftime, scoring from all over the court. She stretched the floor with a three, dominated on the block, and gave Bishop Feehan many second-chance opportunities. My favorite part of Fauria’s game is that she is one of the few #1 scoring options on a team that doesn’t mind doing the dirty work. With the hard box-outs, physical interior defense, and bone-crushing screens, Fauria embraces and does better than most. Bishop Feehan Standouts: [player_tooltip player_id="184021" first="Samantha" last="Reale"] - 5’9’’ - SG - ’23 A major reason why Bishop Feehan won the game was because of their long, athletic wing defenders. Reale was the one who stood out the most, not just because of her defensive activity, but she also contributed on the offensive end. Reale’s length helped cut off St. Mary’s driving and passing angles in the halfcourt. She also was a significant factor in helping slow down St. Mary in transition. [player_tooltip player_id="389884" first="Charlotte" last="Adams-López"]- 5’7’’ - CG - ’25 The freshman guard impressed me during warmups. I liked how hard she was going pregame, and by watching how she moved, I felt like she would give Bishop Feehan good minutes off the bench. Adams-López had 2 three-pointers, one of which came at a crucial point in the second half when Bishop Feehan needed a bucket during St. Mary’s comeback attempt. I like the upside of Adams-Lopez. She is a good athlete, strong, and a consistent long-range shooter who plays confidently. St. Mary’s Standouts: [player_tooltip player_id="267553" first="Niya" last="Morgen"] - 5’6’’ - CG - ’23 [caption id="attachment_389878" align="alignnone" width="300"] Photo: Sam Jones[/caption] Morgen has taken her game up a notch this winter and has become one of her class’ most dangerous scoring guards. She had another 20-point night and poured in buckets from all three levels throughout the game. She ripped 3 three-pointers and hit a barrage of shots in the second half that pulled St. Mary’s within striking distance of Bishop Feehan. [player_tooltip player_id="266787" first="Yirsy" last="Queliz"] - ’5’5’’ - PG - ’23 Queliz’s playmaking from the end of the third quarter through the 4th showed why she is one of the region’s best ’23 floor generals. Queliz controlled the game and commanded the floor during that stretch despite coming up a little short at the end. St. Mary’s finally got into a rhythm in transition because Queliz pushed the tempo and got the ball out in front of the leaking guards and wings running the floor. She finished the game with 16 points, and when Queliz got downhill, she was hard to stop. [player_tooltip player_id="184043" first="Kellyn" last="Preira"] - 5’10’’ - SG/SF - ’23 Arguably the most important player for St. Mary’s on Thursday night was the one with the lowest offensive output. Preira’s defense on Cam Fauria in the last 3 quarters of the game gave her team a legitimate chance to win the CCL Championship. Fauria came out and had 7 quick first-quarter points, and when Preira was the primary defender the rest of the game, she held Fauria to 8. The length and athleticism of Preira were bothersome, and she had several blocked shots down low. She was active, was disciplined on the defensive end, and showed how well-rounded a player she is.
