GHSA State Playoffs: Top Wings Pt. 1
I traveled long and far across the entire state of Georgia from the North to the South, East to West to see some of the most intriguing matchups throughout the state tournament. Now that I can finally catch my breath, here are some of the top performers I saw over the past month of the GHSA State Playoffs.
2023 5-9 W Devin Long – Islands
Softball player that sees the floor extremely well. Can knock down the three and use her toughness to help rebound. Capable of putting the ball down and getting to the hoop.
2023 5-10 W [player_tooltip player_id="302964" first="Mary" last="Mullinax"] – Lumpkin County
Region 7 Player of the Year was named Class 3A Player of the Year after helping lead Lumpkin County to first-ever state championship, averaging 17.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.5 steals per game while shooting 35% from three. Jack-of-all-trades flourishes in disciplined offense. Showcases her passing and ability to catch and finish in traffic. Anticipates very well on the perimeter and jumps passing lanes.
2023 6-1 W [player_tooltip player_id="154581" first="Courtney" last="Ogden"] – Westminster
Prolific scorer committed to Stanford turned Westminster into a Final 4 team after starting 1-8 without her. Scores at all levels. Uses her size and strength to attack the paint and pull-up for mid-range and short jumpers over the defense. Does a good job defending without fouling, blocking multiple shots and leading her team in rebounds.
2023 5-10 W [player_tooltip player_id="302961" first="Erin" last="Whalen"] – North Forsyth
Won Most Improved Player in Class 7A; [player_tooltip player_id="302961" first="Erin" last="Whalen"] does a little bit of everything. She can play every position on the floor. High IQ player that sees the court well when serving as a playmaker in the high post. Scores in the paint and has a soft mid-range jumper. Super sixth man poured in 16 points and 10 rebounds off the bench vs. Grayson. Priority target at the D-II level.
2024 6-0 W [player_tooltip player_id="196117" first="Erin" last="Rodgers"] – Grayson
Elite ceiling with great length and overall skill set. Averaged 15.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Can play 1-4. Smooth finisher that can score on the perimeter as well. Took a huge leap from Year 1 to Year 2. Fills up box scores with her play on both ends.
