Way Too Early Top Eight Teams in 2019-2020 Season
The 2019-20 season is still a long way away but it's not too early to take a look at the top teams in next season. Here's a quick look at who I think will be the top teams in the state next season. I am presenting these in <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>NO PARTICULAR ORDER</strong></span> so please don't think the order is a specific ranking of teams. This is only ten top teams and only in my opinion.
<strong>Mercy - </strong>Home of two of the top Seniors in the class with <strong>Hope Sivori and T'aziah Jenks, </strong>Mercy made it to Rupp Arena last season but fell short of beating GRC. Now they will look to get back to Rupp and make some noise.
<strong>Sacred Heart - </strong>Another Louisville powerhouse, the Valkyries are returning a lot of talent with only Ashlee Harris graduating. <strong>Kristen Clemons and Destinee Marshall</strong> are back and <strong>Erin Toller</strong> will be back from her ACL tear. That's a lot of talent and they'll have quality depth too.
<strong>Mercer County - </strong>The Lady Titans stumbled after back to back state titles. They only lose 2 Seniors and the rising 8th grade class is the real deal, similar to the 2018 group that carried them to those state titles. Look for Mercer to be back in the mix with <strong>Channing Lewis and Timberlynn Yeast</strong> leading the way.
<strong>Scott - </strong>They return one of the top 2021s with <strong>Mya Meredith</strong> and fellow Junior <strong>Sofia Allen</strong> is a double figure scorer. They could win the 10th Region and make the trip to Lexington to compete for a state title.
<strong>Scott County - </strong>There is a big hole in the roster with <strong>Maaliya Owens </strong>but the Lady Cards are not lacking in the depth department. Assuming they don't lose any key players to Great Crossings when it opens, Scott County will be in the mix to win the 11th and could even be better in 2020 than 2019.
<strong>Ryle - </strong>The reigning champs are going to be right back in the mix to repeat. <strong>Lauren Schwartz</strong> is gone but <strong>Maddie Scherr</strong> is the favorite for Miss Basketball for a reason and <strong>Brie Crittendon</strong> is ready to step up and get the Lady Raiders back to Rupp Arena and defend their title.
<strong>Elizabethtown - </strong>They went 16-1 against 5th region foes but lost the title game to Bethlehem. They return D1 caliber player and big time scorer <strong>Whitney Hay</strong> but will have to overcome the Banshees of Bethlehem when the opportunity presents itself again.
<strong>North Laurel - </strong>Consider this a wild card selection but the Lady Jags made the state tournament this season and return 4 of their top 5 scorers. They'll be experienced and battle tested after a trip to Rupp this season. Don't sleep on them winning the 13th again and competing for a title.
